Revelation 2:8

The Dependable Church #

Revelation 2:8-11

Introduction

This is the shortest of the letters to the churches.

Nothing negative is mentioned in the letter to the church of Smyrna. Smyrna was also a wealthy commercial city. Perhaps not as great as Ephesus, but still a wealthy city.

The message is that of encouragement through persecution. Persecution, is not an enjoyable topic, and yet, it is given by Christ himself, who know more about persecution, and suffering than anyone else! Jesus lived an absolutely SINLESS life, and didn’t deserve not even one lash of punishment, yet he took it, for our sakes. It is he, “which was dead, and is alive;”

Romans 8:12

Romans 8:11, 12-17

Introduction

I accidentally left out verse 11, which goes with the last passage we covered. And has some very good truths in it that we must cover before moving on to the next set of verses.

The question is asked in Romans 7:24 -

Rom. 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

1. Jesus Christ in Salvation (Rom 7:25)

Proverbs 2:10

Preserved from Corruption #

Proverbs 2:10-

Intro.

My mom did a lot of canning when I was growing up. She would boil bottles of vegetables, fruit, and even make jellies. It was a lot of work. The last thing that was needed was sealing those jars to preserve them. If they weren’t sealed, bacteria would get in there and break down the food. It would spoil. Solomon gives us a stern warning to Preserve us from Corruption.

Revelation 2:12

The Defiled Church #

Revelation 2:12-17

Introduction

We are going to look at one another state of the church. While these very well can represent ages, they very well could stand for stages or states in which a church may be.

Last week, we looked at Smyrna, as the Dependable Church, who stands through persecution. It was pointed out to me afterwards, that even now, the christians in Smyrna face persecution! So, while it is very popular to define these as ages, they also can be a status of current churches.

Mark 2:18

The Letter of the Law? #

Mark 2:18-22*, 23-28

Introduction

Last week, Levi (Matthew) the Publican was saved, and hosted a dinner to celebrate his salvation! This didn't go over well with the Pharisee's. We will not go back, to that text as we dealt with their criticism, but we have a series of attacks on Jesus by the Pharisees here.

Notice the inclusion of the disciples of John. The Pharisees knew John to be strict in nature, and brought the disciples they could find to support them. Then used them to compare them to Christ's disciples. The devil will use whatever means he can employ to cause great division among the disciples of Christ. We must be wary of his devices.

Psalm 25

Meditating on the LORD #

Psalm 25:8-10

Introduction

Charles Spurgeon in his Treasury on David notes, “This has been styled the second of the seven Penitential Psalms. It is the mark of a true saint that his sorrows remind him of his sins, and his sorrow for sin drives him to his God.”

Psa. 25:7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.

Romans 8:29

God’s Purpose #

Rom 8:29

Introduction

A lot of people, baptists and others have greatly confused the idea of predestination. So I want us to take the time to go through these verses and consider what the text is trying to teach us. Many people will take their beliefs, go to the Bible to try to prove what they believe. Let’s take a look at what the Bible teaches, and see for our self.
