Romans 8:12

Romans 8:11, 12-17

Introduction

I accidentally left out verse 11, which goes with the last passage we covered. And has some very good truths in it that we must cover before moving on to the next set of verses.

The question is asked in Romans 7:24 -

Rom. 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

1. Jesus Christ in Salvation (Rom 7:25)

2. The Spirit of God in Life (Rom 8:1-10) – walk in Spirit

3. God in Resurrection/Rapture (Rom 8:11)

Rom. 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1. God will quicken us!

Quicken – make alive, to vivify

2. Our mortal bodies… The very corrupt, sinful, low down good for nothing flesh that we battle against every day, will be changed!

3. It is quickened by the Spirit NOW… the Spirit of God dwells in us NOW, and He is able to cause us to do right.

I. Indebtedness (Romans 8:12-13) #

Debtor – a person who owes another either money, goods, or services.

  • V13 IF death = eternal, then life = eternal, salvation=works. “ye shall die” cf. Gen 2:17

A. Not to the flesh (12) #

“My friend, the flesh—and we all have it—is a low-down, dirty rascal. And we don’t owe it anything.” - J. Vernon McGee

1. Works of the flesh: #

Gal. 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: …

  • You don’t OWE your flesh any of these.

B. Debtors to Walk in the Spirit! (12) #

1. That is what he has been talking about! #

Rom. 8:1 ¶ There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2. Clearly stated in Galatians as well: #

Gal. 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Gal. 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

  • Walking in the Spirit, will produce fruit of the Spirit

C. Debtors to Witness! (12) #

Rom. 1:14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

II. Inclusion in the Family (Romans 8:14-16) #

We are put into the family, NOT because of our works.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

  • Just as the book of James, shows the practical side of faith being displayed in our works, so salvation is displayed in our living in the Spirit.
  • We are not saved because of our works, rather we work because we are saved!

A. Sons (14) #

1. Sometimes people will say, “We are all the children of God” This is simply not true. It sounds nice, but it isn’t true! #

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

  • Those who have ‘received him’… Jesus Christ, as their personal Saviour.

Rom. 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

B. Adoption (15) #

1. “Received the Spirit of adoption” #

  • This is phrased in the past tense. It is a completed process.
  • God chose to add us to His family!

C. Assurance (16) #

  • The Spirit that dwells in us, gives us that assurance.

III. Inheritance (Romans 8:17-25) #

  • What did we receive? Let’s have the reading of the will!

A. Heir of Suffering (17-18) #

1. Suffering (17) #

  • In that the flesh wars against the Spirit…

  • In chap. 7, we noted this is a proof of our Salvaiton

2. Suffering in perspective (18) #

  • The suffering that we endure here in this life, is worth it because of what awaits us in Glory!
  • Revelation 21:1-4

3. Suffering because of sin (20) #

  • Sin takes a toll on every person!

  • Vanity – emptiness; want of substance to satisfy desire, or arrogance.

    • Both of these affect man’s life.

4. Suffering of the World (22) – weeds, because sin #

Gen. 3:17 ¶ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

B. Heir, but wait (19, 23, 25 “wait”) #

1. Be patient. (25) #

  • It is not easy, nor pleasant, but it is required.

2Tim. 2:1 ¶ Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
