Romans 12:4

One Body #

Romans 12:4-13

Introduction

After beseeching believers to present themselves to the Lord, the topic is now turned to the body of the believers.

I. Unity of Body (4-5) #

A. Parts #

1. Membership - in order to be a member, you must be 1. Saved, 2. Scripturally Baptized (or from a church of like faith). #

2. One body - We are talking about one local church here. Many people refer to the "body" of believers #

  • God purchased the church with his blood!

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

  • Many people don't participate in a church, let me simply state, Jesus started the church, shed his blood for the church, and considers the church his bride, which implies a great deal of love!

  • If the church is that important to God, you cannot be right with God, and not be part of a local new testament Bible preaching, Bible believing church!

    • We are Baptist and make no apology for that!

3. Member dependency - members are dependent upon the other! #

  • What was the church when it started, believers that would gather and sing praises to God, and preach the Word of God! 2000 years now!

  • We depend on one another -

B. Purpose #

1. Evangelize the Lost! - Mark 16:15 #

2. Educate the Saved - "Feed my sheep" #

3. Encourage one another - Heb 10:24 - "provoke unto love and to good works" #

4. Exalt the Saviour! - 1 Cor 10:31 #

5. We MUST UNIFY in this purpose to get it accomplished! #

6. Christ is the UNIFYING factor! (5) #

II. Diversity of Gifts (Romans 12:6-9) #

A. Prophecy (6) #

  • "thus saitheth the Lord" - proclaim God's word

1. This includes foretelling of events #

  • God gave revelation to man in Bible times

  • We now have the completed Word of God

    • We still foretell, the coming of Christ, Tribulation of 7 years, 1000 year reign of Christ, New heaven and earth

2. God has ceased giving us new revelation. #

B. Ministry (7) #

  • ministry - aid or help

1. Some are good at being a help to others! #

C. Teaching (7) #

  • teach - instruct, inform. Not everyone is a teacher. Some people love to instruct, and help others understand.
  • Teaching children, takes a different skill set than teaching adults.

2Tim. 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

D. Exhorting (8) #

  • exhort - 1. To incite by words or advice; to animate or urge by arguments to a good deed or to any laudable conduct or course of action. 2. To advise, to warn with caution

1. This is often goes with preaching #

2Tim. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2. This can be done by giving counsel as well... #

E. Giveth (8) #

  • give - to bestow without receiving a return

1. Some people are natural givers! #

  • The tithe is 10% of what comes in.

    • It is also a principle in the Word of God!
    • It is a starting point! Then give more!

2Cor. 8:1 ¶ Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

F. Ruleth (8) #

  • rule - govern, to oversee something

1. Some are gifted in overseeing projects, and making sure they get done. #

G. Shew mercy (8) #

  • merciful - That benevolence, mildness or tenderness of heart which disposes a person to overlook injuries, or to treat an offender better than he deserves
