Eternal Security #

Hebrews 6:1-8

Introduction

I want to answer two questions with one message. These questions are different, but tread upon the same ground.

Hebrews chapter 6 is a commonly used text to teach salvation can be lost. Could you please clarify the meaning of this passage and the spiritual condition of the individuals who were partakers of the Holy Ghost and fell away?

We know we are eternally secure once we are saved. But what about people who used to claim to be saved, but now claim to be agnostic or atheist. Were they really believers? - They never showed fruit of salvation and even deny the existence of God. What is their eternality?

These questions both deal with the same idea, of the state of man. I will address both at the end. Let’s look at Hebrews 6.

I. Foundation of Jesus (Heb 6:1-3) #

A. Hebrews is a book to the Jews #

1. Jews don’t need convinced who God is. #

B. Jesus needed to be established. #

1. Hebrews 1 – Superiority of Jesus #

Heb. 1:1 ¶ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb. 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Heb. 3:1 ¶ Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

Heb. 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Hebrews 5:12-14 – Time for strong meat.

II. Faith Established (Heb 6:4-5) #

  • This passage is some of the most disputed passages in the Bible.
  • Perhaps you have heard it explained different ways. My prayer and goal is to make it as simple, and clear as can be!

A. Enlightened #

Eph. 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

B. Have tasted the heavenly gift #

C. Were made partakers of the Holy Ghost #

Eph. 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

D. Have tasted the good word of God #

E. Have tasted the powers of the world to come #

Rom. 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

III. Fall away? (Hebrews 6:6) #

  • IMPORTANT: Hebrews 6:4-6 is all ONE sentence!

    • It is not a new thought, or paragraph being introduced in Hebrews 6:6… it is continued.

    • “It is impossible…. IF they shall fall away,”

      • He is not saying it is possible to fall away… but IF they could there is NO WAY for them to be saved again!

A. No renewal #

B. Therefore, it is impossible! #

C. How is a person saved? #

1. Two kinds of People: Condemned, or not Condmented #

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

2. Recognize their sin & therefore condemnation (Romans 3:23, 6:23) #

3. Recognize his Love and Sacrifice (Rom 5:8) #

4. Accept His amazing gift of Salvation (Rom 10:9-10, 13) #

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

1. Either a person placed his faith and trust in Jesus Christ and is saved, or he didn’t.

2Pet. 2:7 ¶ And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

2. Some people never truly believed, accepted God’s gift of Salvation. And simply were not saved.
