3 Homes #

Proverbs 19:13, 14, 18, 26

Introduction

There are three institutions that God created here on the earth, the Home, the church, and the government. None of these is as important as the home! It was the first one instituted. While church is certainly essential, a church can only be as strong as the families that make it up. We live in a day, where a family that was setup God’s way is rare to find. By the way, this is not new, if you read the OT, you will find that families were quite a mess many times in the OT as well.

God’s home is defined by a Man that marries a woman. That is a home. If marriage is blessed by children wonderful, but children don’t make it a home. God intended one man and one woman for a life time. That is what God intended. For many reasons, this ideal setup is often broken. The wonderful thing about God, if you come to Him in the right spirit, He is always more than willing to help you put things back together, and get your life back on track. Rehab the harlot was known by a bad reputation, and yet she humbled herself to God, and God used her. She is only mentioned twice in the NT, and both times she carries the title, harlot. God even included her in the lineage of Jesus!

So if your home is not ideal as God intended, there is still hope, that things can always be better!

You may not be able to change the past, but the doesn’t have to be the same.

I. Hindered Home (Pro 19:13, 26) #

Prov. 19:13 ¶ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

A. Foolish son #

1. Define – Fool – one who has access to the wisdom & truth, but rejects it. #

Verse 26 defines this for us:

Prov. 19:26 ¶ He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

  • Most children do not know what their parents invest in their life, until they have children of their own.

  • The prodigal son, wasted his father’s substance, as well as up bringing.

    • Caused much shame
    • brought reproach on the family name.

2. (13) calamity – Any great misfortune, or cause of misery; #

B. Fighting wife #

1. Contention – strife in words or debate; quarrel; #

  • It takes two to fight.
  • Some people are just contentious, and cannot get along with anyone.
  • It seems she is contentious to him. - he doesn’t do anything right.

2. It is easy to see faults when you live with people #

  • We need to be careful that we don’t become so critical, that our spouse doesn’t do anything right.

  • Constant nagging is like a dripping pipe!

    • Plumbing… nothing worse than a drip

II. Hopeful Home (Pro 19:18) #

A. Chasten – to correct by punishment; to inflict pain for the purpose of reclaiming an offender; #

1. The world’s philosophy, is contrary to that of the Bible. #

  • The “educated” professionals have been trying to “correct” the Bible method for a long time.

  • We must chose… are you going to follow God’s Word, or are you going to follow the philosophies of the world.

    • When you tell a child he came from an animal, don’t be surprised when he acts like and animal.

2. God has provided for us instructions on raising children! #

Prov. 22:15 ¶ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Eph. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

  • Don’t relegate your responsibility of raising children to the government’s educational system.

  • Don’t discipline out of anger… because they made you angry, or got on your nerves.

  • Don’t spare for his crying…

    • Don’t abuse!

B. Condition – “while there is hope” #

1. As your children grow… you opportunity to train, chasten, disappears! #

III. Honored Home (Pro 19:14) #

A. Blessings of man (inheritance) #

  • The idea of an inheritance, goes way back in the Bible.
  • Man generally has desired to leave something to his children.
  • Prov. 13:22 ¶ A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

B. Blessings from God #

1. Prudent – cautious circumspect; practically wise, careful of the consequences of enterprises #

  • Someone who looks ahead, and can see where that road will go!
  • Basically, wisdom, someone who exercises wisdom.

2. This is a heart issue! #

  • There is no question that God has placed man as the head of the home, but the wife sets the heart of the home…

  • In vs 13, we see a contentious wife, in vs 14, we see a prudent wife.

  • A wife who is submitted to God!

    • Hannah is a great example of that sweet, tender heartedness towards God!

      • She was not hard hearted!
    • Ruth is an example of coming out of the world, and following God!

    • Esther is an example of trusting God under pressure!

    • Mary what an incredible role model.
