Everything Made New #
Revelation 21:1-8
Introduction
This entire Chapter is dedicated everything being made new! There is a great re-assurance, in knowing what is to come, and that while the heaven and earth is wiped out, that doesn't include humanity. This is where eternity is really described for us. The world is temporal, and will pass away.
I. New Conditions (1-8) #
A. Assurance of Heaven & Earth (1) #
2Pet. 3:10 -11
- The primary context is that all earthly things will be destroyed. Therefore, we ought to live with the spiritual purpose as our primary goal.
- Prophetic reference is to the fact that the heavens and earth are going to be destroyed.
Matt. 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
- God's word is eternal! - this earth is not!
1John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
- The earth, and all of it's wicked memories and influences, will completely be destroyed.
Is. 65:17 ¶ For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
B. Assurance of Jerusalem (2)John 14:2 "I go to prepare a place for you..." #
-
I have been to Jerusalem, it is an incredible place because of the events that took place there.
-
God will make a NEW JERUSALEM.
- Not the bride, note: "as a bride"
C. Assurance of God's Presence (3, 6-7) - #
- It is important to understand through all eternity, that God is going to be with us.
D. Assurance of eradication of sin (4) - tears #
- Romans 8:22-23 – The entire world suffers from sin. - The earth was cursed with thorns
1. No more tears #
2. No More death! Praise the LORD for that! #
3. No more sorrow – a result of sin. #
4. No more crying – a result of sadness, disappointment and or hurt. #
5. No more pain! - Praise the LORD #
E. Assurance of truth (5) #
- This all seems too good to be true!
- My dad taught me, any deal that seems too good to be true, it probably is! This is the exception!
- God’s Word is true, and he re-assures us of that in eternity.
F. Assurance of Lake of fire (8) - though sin is eradicated, punishment continues. #
- In all of the goodness that is reassured, understand, that the lost, will face eternal damnation in the lake of fire, without hope of escape, elimination, or reprieve.
II. New City (9-27) #
A. Angel - (9-10) #
- Angels were tasked with some onerous chores of judgment, are now tasked with something enjoyable
- Holy City... Jerusalem has been called the holy city in the past because of it's tie to God. Now it is the habitation of God, and truly a HOLY City.
B. City Introduced (11-14) #
1. The bride would obviously be contained within in the city, the city is not the bride. #
- It is an actual literal city - some spiritualize this, as they do much of the book of Revelation.
2. Significance of Israel - #
- Some would like to write Israel completely out of the NT, however, we see her significance through all of eternity! JERUSALEM. 12 Gates, named after the 12 tribes. (12-13)
- 12 foundations (14), represent the 12 apostles
C. Square city (15-16) #
- Roughly 1,500 miles
D. Wall (17) #
- This wall is 216 feet wide, not tall.
E. Beauty of the City (18) #
- This is a great city!
- Pure gold (18, 21) (street pure gold)
F. Stone foundations (19-20) #
G. Pearly gates (21) #
- These are in reference to Jerusalem, the New city, located in the new earth.
