Psalm 49:1-5

Introduction

Verses 1-4 of this Psalm give a flowery introduction to this Psalm.

II. Condemnation of trusting wealth (6-9) #

A. Not wrong to be rich (6) #

1Tim. 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

2. Trusting in money! (6) #

B. Not Redeemable! (7-9) #

1Pet. 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

1. Jesus Blood is the ONLY thing that can redeem the soul! #

2. Vs 8 “it ceaseth for ever” – soul must be redeemed while it is still living, after it dies, opportunity of redemption ends eternally. #

III. Certainty of Death (10) #

A. Death is not respecter of persons! #

Heb. 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

1. You cannot take it with you when you die! #

2. Other’s will take it! “to others” #

IV. Choice of Philosophy (11-14) #

A. Their Philosophy (11) “continue for ever” #

  1. Living on through things? Not possible

V. Confidence in God (15) #

The question is asked in verse 5:

Psa. 49:5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
