Mark 1:35

Lessons from our Lord #

Mark 1:35-45

Introduction

Last time, we looked at Jesus Authority. Authority with the Scriptures, Authority over spirits, and Authority over sickness. He should be our Authority! We are going to look at lessons that we can learn from the Lord!

I. Lessons of Prayer (35) #

  • Prayer was an important part of Jesus life.
  • Prayer is talking with God, poor out your heart and soul, make requests and petitions, talk with him!

A. Start of the day "rising up a great while before day" #

1. Ministry - service #

  • We are saved to serve... so every christian should be ministering!
  • Requires effort, get up!

2. Start the day with the Lord! #

  • Before you get busy with everything, before the people gathered around him.

B. Solitary place "solitary place" #

1. Need to be alone with God! #

2. Quite place - no distractions #

  • Shut off the social media, set your phone to silent

“10\ Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

C. Supplication "prayed" - not just over food! #

1. Pray for yourself! #

  • You need the strength, grace, and power of God on your life, wisdom!

“5\ If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)

2. Pray for others - family, church, missionaries #

II. Lesson of Purpose (36-38) #

  • "And when they had found him" took them a bit

  • "All men seek for thee." - what men? vs 34... those who needed healing.

    • They were seeking self preservation, healing.
    • The disciples were new, and wanted Jesus to come back
    • Jesus could have stayed right there, and established a large ministry!

A. Going - "Let us go into the next towns" #

1. Jesus ministry was about reaching lost people. #

  • Jesus traveled all over Jerusalem. He had an extensive ministry, which allowed him to reach multitudes of people!
  • We are not Jesus, and our ministry is not that of Jesus... but let us be going after souls!

“19\ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19)

B. Gospel "that I may preach" #

  • Jesus cared for people, Jesus did social ministry... but that was not his primary purpose!
  • People think the church is just a social outreach, providing services for the people... NO we are about PREACHING the Message!

C. Goal "therefore came I forth" #

1. Jesus didn't come to heal people #

2. Jesus didn't come to establish a large church #

3. Jesus came to Preach 39 - it must be central goal #

III. Lesson about People (40-45) #

  • Jesus, didn't become so goal oriented, that he forgot about people!
  • People are always at the central part of the ministry!

A. Coming Leper (40) #

  • Leprosy in the Bible represents sin.

1. He was unclean - People often marked by sin. #

  • As people, we tend to look for only people like us... This unclean sin sick soul, came to Jesus!
  • Jesus didn't turn him away

2. He was incurable - #

  • People try everything... then come to Christ
  • Condemned to death with leprosy.

3. He was inquiring - he came requesting to be clean! #

B. A Compassionate Lord! (41) #

1. "moved with compassion" - compassion - sympathetic consciousness of other's distress. #

    • Our tendency is hardheartedness toward others.

2. "touched him" - this man was not to be touched by others... and Jesus with a tender compassionate heart, reaches out and touches him. #

3. "saith unto him" - Compassionate healing words. #

C. A Cleansed Leper - (42) #

1. His life was changed! - His death sentence was changed. He had been given a new lease on life. #

D. A Charged Leper - (43-45) #

1. Why v44? - Miriam, Naaman cured of leprosy... #

  • In 4000 year history of the OT, 2 healed.

2. Couldn't contain it! (45) - Jesus was run out of town. #
