Finding Assurance #

Psalm 55:1-7

Introduction

We find the Psalmist in great distress, feeling very betrayed. He was hurt, but not by the typical enemy, who he knew was against him, but notice in verse 12-14.

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

Nothing hurts more than being hurt by those you love. No pain is greater felt, than having a trusting relationship with someone who would betray you, and hurt you in ways that only someone close to you can.

Every person will be hurt in this way during their lifetime.

Is. 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

  • Knowingly living in sin, is to effectively God off from your side.

Ezek. 39:23 ¶ And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
