Psalm 29

God’s Great Storm #

Psalm 29:1-11

Introduction

As the Psalm opens, it would seem that the first few verses are out of place, and do not fit with the rest of the Psalm. Admittedly, it takes some reading, praying and seeking to find how the entirety of the Psalm comes together under one title, but I can assure you by the end, we will have it packaged up in a nice neat package that David placed it in.

I. God’s Volunteers (1-2) #

  • Giving, in it’s very nature, is a voluntary action.

A. Who of Giving – “unto the LORD” #

  • When we give, we are to give unto the LORD!
  • The local NT church was established as the place to give. It was established by Jesus himself, and built by Him, and sustained by Him!

B. What of Giving #

1. Give or our Substance (1) “glory” #

Prov. 3:9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

  • Giving to God, is honouring!

    • It is declaring that God is first in your life!

2. Give of our Strength (1) “strength” #

3. Give of our Self (2) #

C. The Why of Giving (2) “due unto his name” #

Rev. 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

II. God’s Voice (3-9) #

  • There is much allusion here given to God’s voice being equated to that of a powerful thunderstorm.
  • There are seven very clear references to the Voice of the LORD.
  • LORD = Jehovah God, the One True God!
  • Remember, Idols have mouths, but don’t talk, they have no voice!

A. The Site of His Voice (3) #

1. Not confined to one place! #

  • Waters in the Bible generally refers to a body of water. - God’s Voice, is upon all the waters.

2. It is clear in the second phrase, “many waters” #

  • God’s voice is not limited to one little small place, but runs throughout the World!

B. The Strength of His Voice (4) #

  • Creation substantiates the Power of God’s voice!
  • With just speaking, the world was created into existence!

C. The Splendor of His Voice (4) “full of majesty” #

  • His voice is unlike any other!

Rev. 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

D. The Smiting by His Voice (5-6) #

  • Unicorn, likely an animal that is now extinct. It is NOT a mythical horse with one horn commonly referred to as a unicorn today.
  • Cedars are often referenced in the Bible for their strength, resistance to bugs, longevity of life. Nothing stands to the voice of God!

E. The Separating by His Voice (7) #

Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

  • Flame could be severed by the voice of God!
  • Flames could be sent by the voice of God (Elijah, Mt Carmel).

F. The Shaking by His Voice (8) #

  • God has the ability to shake the world merely with His voice!

G. The Supremacy of His Voice (9) #

  • Cause the hind (deer) to give birth,
  • Cause the leaves to fall!
  • His voice reaches everywhere, and nothing is strong enough to stand against the sound of His voice!

III. God’s Virtue (10-11) #

A. Seated – (2xs) (10) Calm disposition #

1. Upon the flood – the greatest judgement to fall on the earth #

2. King, still in control! #

B. Strength (11) #

1. To go through the storms that will come! #

C. Stillness (11) #

  • It is possible to go through a storm, and have the peace of God in your hearts!
  • God grants that to his volunteers!
  • Gives you all the more reason to trust, give, glorify, and honor Him!
