Reasons to Praise the Lord #

Psalm 92:1-15

Introduction

This is a simply Psalm, that much like our last one, is very positive, and encouraging. Some Psalms can be challenging, this is not one of those. It is a blessing to those who read it, it is a drink of cool water to the thirsty soul.

I. Forms of Praise - (Psalm 92:1-3) #

A. Singing! (1) “And to sing praises” #

1. “It is good” #

2. Give Thanks unto the LORD #

3. Praises – Being thankful, appreciative. #

B. Show and Tell (2) #

1. Lovingkindness #

Romans 5:8 “8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

1. “ten strings” Only 3 times in the Bible, only Psalms #

Psalm 33:2 “2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.”

Psalm 144:9 “9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.”

III. Foes in Praise (Psalm 92:7-11) #

A. Blessings of seeing God > problems (7-9) #

1. We have a natural tendency to focus on problems #

2. Satan wants us to focus on problems #

3. Looking at God, helps us see the limited time of enemies, and eternality of God! #

B. Blessings of strength (10) #

  • Unicorn – possibly an Ox that is now extinct, or perhaps a rhinoceros

1. Horn = strength #

2. Oil = spirit of God! #

C. Blessing of witnessing enemies destroyed (11) #

IV. Flourishing and Praise (Psalm 92:12-15) #

  • FLOURISHING - Thriving; prosperous; increasing; making a show.

A. Promise of Flourishing #

1. Illustrated through trees (12) #

Palm – prosperity & happiness #
Cedar – strength, solemnity, stability. #

2. Stipulation of the flourishing (13) – where they are planted makes a difference #

Psalm 1:1 “1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

Psalm 1:3 “3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
