From Darkness to Delight #

Psalm 13:1-6

Introduction

David’s life is recorded for us in great detail. He is a well known character in the Bible, and history. Lockyer describes him in this way:

“Volumes have been written on the trials and triumphs of David, a mountain peak among Bible characters, who was carefully chosen as Israel’s second king by God Himself.” – All the Men of the Bible - pg 89. Lockyer

I. Darkness (1-2) #

A. Complaint (1) #

i.This is NOT a request, it is a charge/complaint… #

ii.Complaining is sin! #

Phil. 2:14 ¶ Do all things without [murmurings]{.underline} and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

  • Murmur – to utter complaints in a low, half-articulated voice. To feel or express dissatisfaction or discontent, to grumble

B. Counsel (2) “I take counsel in my soul” #

i.David doesn’t seek, or have counsel here! #

ii.Counsel of self, is dangerous!!! Leads to darkness! #

John 11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

iii.God’s counsel, will help! #

II. Direction (3-4) #

A. Call (3) #

i.Consider – God, has NOT stopped thinking about or considering you, or your situation! - However, it makes him feel better #

ii.“lighten mine eyes” #

Lam. 5:17 ¶ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.

John 8:12 ¶ Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Eph. 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

B. Concern (4) #

III. Delight! (5-6) #

  • Once David turned to God… we see a complete change!

A. Confidence (5) #

i.“I have trusted in thy mercy” #

Prov. 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

ii.Choosing to trust God, relieves pressure! #

B. Change (6) #

i.After trust, Rejoice (5) #

ii.After heart rejoicing, comes singing! (6a) #

“…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Matt 12:34

iii.Outlook (6b) “because he hath dealt bountifully with me.” #

  • David is no longer questioning God’s involvement, but rather sees it, and rejoices in His bountiful blessings! - His circumstances didn’t change, his perspective did!
