Proper Praise #

Psalm 100

Introduction

We have a very well known Psalm. I want to give us some thoughts out of this Psalm. It is a Psalm rightfully titled, a Psalm of Praise. We often think of praise as that of only words. If praise is only words, we end up with empty lip service, and not fully satisfying praise to the Lord.

Isaiah 29:13 - “13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:”

Proper praise is that of praising the Lord with the entirety of who we are, not just our voice.

There are several commands given to us in the first 4 verses. We need to understand each one of them, because that is where Proper Praise is found. Praise is found in completion of those four things.

I. Sing unto the LORD (1) #

A. Sing for the Lord #

i. Review #

Psalm 95:1–2 - “1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.” Psalm 98:4 - “4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.”

• Repetition in the Bible is for our learning! The more it is said, the louder it is!

ii. Our song should be unto the LORD #

B. All lands! #

i. This is not limited to a select chosen few, but “all lands” #

• It is not just in America, or Israel, but all over the World the LORD is to be praised!

II. Serve the LORD (2) #

• Serve – to work for; to bestow the labor of body and mind in the employment of another

A. Labor #

1 Corinthians 15:58 - “58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

• We were happy talking about praise, but rolling up our sleeves, and getting our hands dirty, laboring, working for the LORD! – YES

Romans 12:11 - “11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;”

B. Joyfully “with gladness” #

• Be joyful about the masters business!

III. Step into his presence (2) #

• Perhaps this is more about how we are to enter his presence, but you must step into the presence of God!

A. Don’t hide! #

• Adam and Eve, when they had sinned against God, their conscience convicted them, and when they heard God’s voice, the HID themselves… They didn’t want to come into his presence!

i. Being in God’s presence keeps you clean! #

ii. Being in God’s presence makes you closer to him #

B. Take the first step. #

i. “Come” – man is invited to come to God #

    ◦ Man who comes to God, should not, and will not leave the same!
    ◦ All are invited, not all come.

Matthew 11:28 - “28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

ii. “with singing” #

• We start all our services with singing… why?
• We are told repeatedly in the Psalms to sing, we are told to come into his presence with singing!

IV. See him as God (3) #

• Most people don’t recognize him as God… they want to be in charge.

A. Creator – “hath made us” #

i. Mark it down, you were made by God #

ii. Mark it down, you were not by yourself! - #

B. Bought #

i. We belong to him! #

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 - “19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

ii. We are sheep – defenseless, needy, people. #

V. Step into his Sanctuary (4) #

• In verse 2 we are invited into his presence, in verse 4 we are invited to his house.

A. Thanksgiving! #

• We are not only to come joyful, but grateful!
• Thankful for his salvation, for his involvement, invitation, opportunity to serve him!

B. Praise #

VI. Source of Praise (5) #

A. God’s Goodness #

B. God’s Mercy #

• It is everlasting

C. God’s Truth – endures (The Bible) #
