Psalm 69

Introduction

Shoshannim means lilies, and it is in reference to the spring time and the passover. It is a very prophetic Psalm. Spurgeon says of it

“In the forty-fifth they were golden lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh, and blooming in the fair gardens which skirt the ivory palaces: in this we have the lily among thorns, the lily of the valley, fair and beautiful, blooming in the garden of Gethsemane.”

This is a Psalm of David, and undoubtedly, David had difficulty, and problems. We do not know the time this was associated with David’s life. However I want us to see the prophetic tie to Jesus’ life. Some of the verses very clearly revert back to David’s life, and are clearly NOT prophetic in nature as they do not fit the life of Jesus.

Let me give you the major division of the Psalm:

1. His Concerns (1-18) – with three sub-points

2. His Call to Action (19-36) – with three sub-points

Psalm 22 is the only other passage quoted more frequently than this passage in the NT.

I. His Concerns (1-18) #

A. Complete despair (human feeling) (1-4) #

1. “Save me O God” – a clear need for help! #

  • There is a sense of hopeless despair (verse 2)

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

2. Crying in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane #

Hebrews 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

3. Multitude of enemies! (4) - Not a friendly face in the crowd! “hate me without a cause”*** Jesus! #

  • “Then I restored that which I took not away.”

B. Concern for others (disciples) (6-12 #

1. Disciples (6-8) – Great parallel of Jesus concern for his disciples! #

2. Pharisees (9-12) – Jesus zeal, and passion for righteousness. #

  • V9 - This passage was quoted when Jesus went into the temple and overturned the tables!

  • V9b – quoted in Romans 15:1-3*

C. Concerning deliverance (13-18) 14-15*, 17 #

1. Jesus is God, and yet, he submitted himself to death #

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

2. He looked to God for deliverance! #

Psalm 18:4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

3. 15b “And let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.” #

II. His Call to Action (19-36) #

A. Reality of the Enemy (19-21) #

1. Vs 20 “I looked for some to take pity,” #

2. Vs 21 – Gall & Vinegar #

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

2. 31 – Pleasing to God #

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
