God’s Family Plan #
Mark 10:1-16
Introduction
I have titled the message God’s Family Plan, not because God is specifically outlining the idea for a family, but the entirety of this passage, is so necessary for Family matters, that I have dubbed it, God’s Family Plan. We literally have three separate instances that are back to back that I have stitched together for one message to help families.
God instituted the family, when he placed Adam and Eve in the garden. Children are not necessary to have God’s instituted, or designed family.
Satan desires to destroy families, and has been extremely successful in our society. Families are falling apart all over the place. Bible teaching on the home is such a needful topic in our society today.
I. Plan for Marriage (1-12) #
A. Pharisee’s Question (2) #
• The Pharisees are not interested in truth, but interested in stirring up trouble, and controversy. • Apparently Marriage was just as much of an issue then as it is today. • Divorce is not new, it was around in Moses day, since the beginning of time!
B. Precept of Moses (4-5) #
i. Moses wrote into the law (Deut 24:1-4), that they could divorce. #
• Jesus clarifies it was because of the hardness of their heart. • Sin had affected mankind so badly, that it ruins God’s perfect plan. • Sin is still ruining God’s perfect plan today! • In a perfect world, there will be no divorce, there will be no adultery, right now, we are living in a flawed, sin filled world. ◦ Your spouse is not perfect…. Neither are you! ◦ Sin will wreck your home, if you let it!
C. Perfect plan (6-9) #
i. God’s plan (6) #
• God only created one ADAM • God only created one EVE…. There was no backup!
ii. They became ONE FLESH (7-9) #
• Divorce is kind of like ripping your arm off… it is never easy, never pretty, and always hurts! • Let NO MAN PUT asunder!
D. Private clarity (10-12) #
i. Disciples thought they had missed something: #
• Jesus clear said, divorce, and remarriage is sin, comparable to adultery.
II. Plan for Children (13-16) #
• This is not in the context of marriage… just to be clear. But it is not a coincidence that this account follows the topic of marriage.
A. Rebuke of the Children (13) #
i. Parents bringing children. #
• These parents were concerned for the well being of their children. • The text doesn’t say that they were sick
ii. The disciples trying to protect Jesus, didn’t want the children there. #
• I don’t think the disciples had bad intentions… they simply wanted to protect Jesus. • The disciples have been with Jesus a long time, and are starting to do things on their own
B. Reprimand of the Disciples (14-15) #
i. Jesus loves children #
• Jesus desires children to learn of him! • That is why we run a bus, that is why we have children’s classes • That is why we have JR Church, Camp, VBS, children need to learn about God • “It is easier to build boys and girls than to repair men and women.”
ii. Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come” #
• Allow them! Let them come to church, raise them in the Word of God!
iii. Childlike faith – we get the phrase (15) #
C. Reception of Children (16) #
i. Jesus took them in his arms #
• This has to be one of the most precious scenes in the Bible… Jesus embracing the little children!
ii. Jesus Blessed them! #
III. Plan for Salvation (15) #
• God’s simple plan for salvation is spelled out for us in verse 15. • Receiving the Kingdom of God
A. Gospel is for all! Whosoever #
i. The Gospel is not limited to a small select group of people, but to everyone! #
• There are a lot of people who are teaching that salvation is only for God’s elect… they have been selected for Salvation. – That is false teaching.
ii. Gospel is for all! #
John 3:15–16 —15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
B. Gospel is by Faith! “receive…. As a little child” #
i. Children just believe things! #
• Children are very trusting. (that is why God gave them parents to protect them.) • The idea here is the faith of a child!
ii. Salvation is by faith! #
Ephesians 2:8–9 —8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
