Who is God for you? #
Psalm 59:1
Introduction
It is amazing how many of the Psalms are born out of great hardship. May we ever be reminded that hard times are not without fruit.
Spurgeon “The Music of the sanctuary is no small degree indebted to the trials of the saints.”
Great trials bring great victories, and even great songs. Don’t think that a trial is worthless or vain there are great lessons to be learned in every trial and difficulty in life.
Let us see three ways that God is a help to us!
Let’s read the circumstances to which the Psalm was penned:
1 Samuel 19:11-18
I. God His Saviour (1-9) #
A. Adversaries (1-3,9) “against me” 1 #
1. “against me” 1 – They have pitted themselves against David! #
2. Workers of iniquity 2 #
-
- “workers of iniquity” are not good men.
- Killers “bloody men” – not strangers to killing
3. Mighty – 3, 9 “because of his strength” #
4. Noisy (6-7) – They want everyone to know what they are doing. #
B. Appeal (3-4) “not for my transgression, nor for my sin” #
1. Wickedness rises against us, simply because you live right! #
John 15:18 ¶ If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
C. Asking (1-2, 5, 8-9) – Focus on God as deliverer #
1. “LORD of hosts” - #
2. Laugh v8 – God laughs at the “power” of this world #
3. Waiting on the LORD “my defence” 9 #
II. God our Shield (10-15) #
- “shall prevent me” 10 – prevent – to proceed, go before
A. Following (10) #
1. When you let God lead the way, He goes before as a shield. #
2. You better fall in behind, and stay close! #
B. Stop them (11-12) #
1. “Scatter them” 11 – scattering weakens them. #
2. “sin of their mouth” 12 #
C. Purpose (13) #
1. “God ruleth in Jacob” #
2. “unto the ends of the earth” – in all parts! #
Psa. 91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
3. Consumed – (stop them) #
D. Disgraced! (14-15) #
III. God our Song (16-17) #
A. Power of God! (16) #
