Revelation 10:1-8

Introduction

We have already looked at the seven seals. We have looked at 6 of the 7 trumpets. If you remember, the seals, the first 6 are listed in chapter 6, and then in chapter 7 is a parenthetical statement. It is a pause in the sequence of events, and gives us relevant facts about some of the people, that will be dealt with going forward. We have much the same situation here in chapter 10. We have looked at 6 of the trumpets sounding, and prior to the 7th, we have chapter 10 as a parenthetical statement that is going to give us some relevant facts about places. All of this takes place during the tribulation period. The rapture of the saved happened right at the beginning of chapter 4. We do not see reference to the church (body of believers) after chapter 4.

I. The Angel (10:1-8) #

There are good people who believe this is a description of Jesus Christ, and good people who do not believe it is Jesus Christ. I do believe it is Jesus, based on what I have studied.

A. Description #

  • Is this angel Jesus Christ?

    • Arguments for no –

      • Described as ‘another angel’ (1)
      • ‘his left foot on the earth’ (1) Jesus won’t touch earth till he splits the mt of Olives? Verse? (Zech 14:3-4) Does give the fact that Jesus will stand upon the Mount of Olives, but doesn’t limit it to only then.
      • ‘sware by him that liveth for ever’ (6)

1. Power (1) “mighty angel” #

  • While there are certainly some powerful angels, Jesus, is all-powerful!

2. Promise displayed (1) “a rainbow was upon his head” #

  • This is not a like or as, but a statement of fact.
  • Genesis 9:12-17 – token of the bow (rainbow)
  • God’s promises rest upon His head displayed

3. Proprietor (2) – “foot upon the sea… upon the earth” - owner #

B. Mystery (4) #

Psa. 29:4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

1. There are things that God has purposefully not revealed to us! #

2. These will be revealed! (7) #

II. The Little Book (10:8-10) #

  • This little book is the Word of God!

A. Open book (8) #

  • It is an “OPEN book”

B. It is a sweet book! (9) “in thy mouth sweet as honey” #

1. The Word of God is intended to be consumed! #

Matt. 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

  • We must consume spiritually to live spiritually! -

    • Perhaps spiritual deadness, is malnourishment.
    • Many people in Africa were famished, thin, frail malnourished! - Are we spiritually?

Jer. 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

2. The Word of God is sweet to taste! - #

Psa. 119:103 ¶ How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

C. The Bitter Truth (9) “make thy belly bitter” #

Walter Scott (preacher from the 1800’s) says, “Prophecy both gladdens and saddens, as it contains announcements both of joy and grief.” Scripture contains both the “sweet message of deliverance and the bitter message of damnation” (Strauss). The faithful preacher who loves to preach the Word of God knows that some passages of Scripture are a joy to preach while others bring pain and persecution if you preach them.

D. Obedience! (10) it is KEY #

III. The Responsibility (10:11) #

A. Given a task! #

  • Those who focus on the LORD, consume His Word, are often tasked with further responsibilities.
  • There is something to be said for consuming the Word of God!
  • Read, meditate, learn, memorize, hid it in your heart.

Prov. 2:1 ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

  • I have heard a few times from people, “I haven’t read the OT” – READ the ENTIRE Bible cover to cover!

2Tim. 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

B. Prophesy – thus saith the LORD! #

1. Proclaim the Word of the Lord #

  • You must be familiar, and have consumed the Word of God before you can give the Word of God!
  • Those who preach and teach, know we don’t just stand up here, and speak off the top of our heads!

C. Many people! - nations, tongues, kings #

In the midst of the tribulation, there is a pause, to remind us to ALWAYS stay focused on the LORD & His WORD!
