Advice for a Son #
Pro 1:10-19
Intro.
We can see the advice coming from a fatherly figure, trying to counsel his son, and help him as he goes through life. As we read this, it is often applied to young people, but it is certainly not exclusively for young people. As we march through different stages in our life, there are certainly times when we will face temptation such as is described here. It would do us all well to pay attention to what is written, and keep it in our heart to protect our way.
I. Company - Sinners (11-13) #
A. Lay wait (11) #
Lion waiting for easy prey.
A little prudence goes a long way to prevent crime… They look for a simple target.
B. Lurk privily (11) #
Hang out in dark, bad areas, looking for a simple one to come by
Will not be obvious,
They will not wear a label, I’m evil, and looking for trouble
2Cor. 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
C. Look easy prey (12 - swallow them up) #
Simple easy
Saints (to corrupt them) because: despise righteousness
D. Lure - riches (13) #
Entice thee (10) - Deut 13:6 - secrecy, deception, fishing lure
Precious substance - 2 Pet 2:18-19
Is. 46:6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.
Fill our houses with spoil - fill their houses, not yours.
II. Cost (14) #
A. Lot (what you have) #
1. Cast in - put in everything #
2. This is communism at the heart, and never works! #
3. Anyone who tells you to put it all in… this is a problem. #
4. God only requires 10%! #
a) Early christians
(1) Acts 2:44, 4:34, recorded, no required
(2) Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira were free to do as they wanted.
(3) Acts 6 it actually became a problem, and widows were being
neglected.
5. Join us! #
6. We believe in separation! Un spotted #
7. A clear distinction between us and the world. #
8. A clear distinction between us and other religions! Ecumenical. #
B. Liberty (one purse, freedom) #
1. You will not be able to decide any longer. #
2. If you opt out… you opt out with nothing! #
III. Concern (15-17) #
1. Life is a journey, it takes you down many winding roads y’s, stops, turns, twists and many decisions #
A. Guard your walk - #

Every parent is concerned, or should be concerned who their child spends time with!

The advice here is no different, Don’t hang out with the wrong crowd!
a) What is good for the young person is good for the adult!
b) “Birds of a feather flock together” “Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are.”
Psa. 1:1 ¶ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
1. 1 Cor 5:9-11 #
a) Be careful of worldly friends
b) Be careful of backslidden christian friends
(1) Just because they are christian doesn't mean they are right!
c) Don’t move to the mountains and start a ‘christian community’, we are ’to be in the world’, but not 'of the world.’
John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
B. Guard your way (15) #

IV. Condemnation (17-19) #
A. Warning (17) #

You would never show a prey your trap, and tell him this is how I will trap you.

The net is spread in vain… because a clear warning has been issued.

B. Waiting (pending judgment) (18) #

They are waiting to take advantage of people… but the truth of the matter, they wait “for their own blood”.

Have you ever looked at the wickedness, and wondered, “Why doesn’t God judge that?” “Why does God let that go?”
Heb. 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
- Even the wicked are extended mercy, not getting what they deserve. They have an opportunity to repent.
C. Ways of greedy (19) #
1. This is not just for the wicked, vile people that are looking to take advantage of others in a cruel way, it is for ’everyone that is greedy of gain.' #
1Tim. 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
