Proverbs 1:1
Intro.
I can think of nothing more needful in 2018 than learning wisdom. Lord willing I would like to be able to go through the book or proverbs, and glean the wisdom that God has given us from the wisest man on earth.
I. Proverbs #
A. Definition - #
A short sentence often repeated, expressing a well known truth or common fact, ascertained by experience or observation; a maxim of wisdom. Websters 1828
The Bible sheds another light on a proverb:
Deut. 28:37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee.
1Kings 9:7 Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:
Jer. 24:9 And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.
- Often a truth that happened, and became an example. “The boy that cried wolf!"
B. Diversity of Proverbs! 1 Kings 4:30-34 #
I believe God has preserved and given us the best of the best! The Book of proverbs contains about 900 proverbs, according to one commentator. (Adam Clarke commentary)
II. Parents - Heritage, Background #
A. Sin #
-
Bathsheba - not much is known, she was wife to Uriah, a faithful soldier in the army of David.
-
David -
a) Anointed to be king at as a young person (tender heart)
b) Slew Goliath - (faith in God)
a) Ability to sing and praise God, the Psalms! (his sincere praise of God)
b) Days of being hunted by King Saul (where his faith increased).
c) NOT Everything in Davids life was good, he was not Perfect.
-
Consequences of sin (2 Sam 12:7-10)
2Sam. 12:10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
-
There may be consequences from sin, but it doesn’t always end God’s use for you!
a) Sin is foolish! Don’t decide to commit sin, and then expect God to bail you out!
(1) Sin is wicked, [adultery, is sin!]{.underline} It is wicked in God's eyes. [Murder is wicked, it is sin!]{.underline} I'm not whitewashing David's sin by any stretch. [Deceit, lying and coverup, is wicked, it is sin]{.underline}!b) Foolish mistakes are made, get back up, repent, get it right, and do your best to continue forward!
-
Steps to restoration:
a) Psalm 51 title reads, “A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him after he had gone in to Bathsheba.” Brokenness for your sin! (Recognize, Repent (turn), Ps 51:1-3, 17)
b) Ask for forgiveness! (Renew, Restore! Ps. 51:10-12)
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
B. Schooling (I Kings 2:1-4) (instruction, teaching, leadership) #
1. vs 3-4 - Importance placed on following God! #
2. David didn’t just give verbal instructions, David was a man after God’s own heart. (Acts 13:22) #
3. It is not enough to instruct your children. You need to instruct, but you need to practice what you preach. You know why Solomon followed God, he was shown a good example of a man of God at home! #
4. Men, you are to be the leader in the home. Stand up and be the spiritual leader! It shouldn’t be mom suggesting the family go to church, it shouldn’t be mom suggesting the family read the Bible or pray. I’m thankful for the spiritual ladies, and when the man doesn’t stand up, I’m glad she would stand up in the right spirit and attitude, but we need men that aren’t afraid to stand up and be the spiritual leader! #
5. Blessing - outcome, results #
III. Product (1 Kings 3:3-14) #
A. Petition - (1 Kings 3:3-4) #
- Maintain a relationship with God!
3John 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
-
God asks for his request (1 Kings 3:5)
a) What would you ask for?
-
Selflessness pleases God! (1 Kings 3:10)
B. Promise to be the greatest (1 Kings 3:12) #
- God promised to make him the wisest king ever.
C. Prominence (1 Kings 3:13) #
-
Greatest king ever!
-
God goes over and above what we could ask or think,
