Firmly Fixed on God #
Psalm 57:1-11
Introduction
Some Psalms, you can sense that the Psalmist is overwhelmed in his circumstances, other Psalms, you don’t see it at all. There is not a sense of being overwhelmed in this Psalm. There is not a sense of ignorance either.
We find a few things that are repeated in this Psalm. We will focus on those things this evening. Repetition is a way to emphasize something in poetry, writing, and song. All apply to this Psalm.
I. Cry (Ps 57:1-2) #
A. Plea of mercy #
1. Not on our merit #
2. Pleads for mercy, as undeserving of God’s help! #
B. Protection “in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge” #
1. David hides in caves, but trusts in God’s wing. #
C. Patience - Certainty of the passing storm “until these calamities be overpast.” #
1. Some storms last longer than others #
2. Be patient, harboring under the wing of God. #
D. Power of God (2) “most high”,“performeth all things” #
1. Plea to the “MOST HIGH” #
2. Recognizes that God does all, and is able to do all. #
II. Confidence (Ps 57:3-4, 6) #
A. Surety “shall send” (3) #
1. There is not doubt or wavering with David! #
- In Ps 56, we noted He managed his fear, there is no fear in this Psalm!
2. He is trusting in God! #
Prov. 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
B. Surrounded by bad! “among lions” (4) #
1. Recognizes the danger! #
C. Sleep (4) “lie even among them” #
1. Incredible faith! #
2. He lays down to sleep! #
D. Snare (6) “they are fallen themselves” #
1. Many enemies, set a snare, only be trapped in it themselves. #
2. Give your enemies enough rope to hang themselves with, and they usually will. #
III. Choice (Ps 57:7) #
A. Focus #
1. Not on enemies – take your eye off them! #
2. Not on problems – stop focusing on them! #
3. Setting your focus on God #
B. Faith #
1. Trusting in God #
Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
