Psalm 95

Introduction

This Psalm effectively defines worship on a long term basis. There is not a Title listed, but it’s author based on a NT passage is David.

Hebrews 4:7 “7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

This corresponds with verse 7-8 in the Psalm.

I. Singing unto the LORD (1-2) #

A. Sing unto the LORD (1) #

B. Sing joyfully & Loudly! (1&2) #

  • The phrase “joyful noise” is used multiple times in the book of Psalms.
  • Noise – sound of any kind, music, in general, a concert

Psalm 66:1 “1 Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:”

Psalm 81:1 “1 Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.”

Psalm 98:4 “4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.”

Psalm 98:6 “6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.”

Psalm 100:1 “1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.”

1. Noise implies volume… loud as in unashamed! #

2. The song and music is not to be unskillful or without quality… but it is to be music! #

3. “rock of our salvation” - If you are saved, you always have something to sing about! #

C. Sing in his presence! (2) “Let us come before his presence” #

1. Get in his presence! – many avoid his presence! #

Matthew 18:20 “20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

2. Gratitude! #

Philippians 2:14 “14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:”

II. Supremacy of God (3-5) #

A. Above all gods! (3) #

1. We make gods! #

  • This is not proclaiming there are other gods.
  • WE (mankind) make gods! – idols

Psalm 115:4–8 “4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.”

2. We prioritize things that are not important! #

B. Earth (4) #

1. Deep places #

  • We have not fully explored the depths of the sea. In fact, more than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored and unmapped, especially the deep sea. Mariana Trench, is about 11,000 meters down. – Oceans cover 70% of the earth!

2. Hills also! #

  • The Psalmist brings two opposing thoughts to mind, the height of the mountains, and the depth of the earth! I have had great privilege to be in many mountains, but I certainly have not made it to the highest peaks!

C. Creator (5) #

1. He created it all! #

III. Submit (6-7) #

A. Bow (6) #

1. Humility #

James 4:10 “10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

2. Submission #

B. Needy (7) #

  • Sheep are:

1. Defenseless #

2. Dumb #

IV. Soften your heart (8-11) #

A. Natural inclination to hardheartedness (8) #

B. Saw the work (9) #

C. God is grieved (10) #

D. No promised land for them! (11) #
