A Corporate Prayer #
Psalm 20:1-9
Introduction This Psalm is somewhat of a National Anthem Psalm, thought of during war time. It could be sung as a prayer for the king by the people. It would of course be directed to God. It is an intercessory prayer on the part of the people for their leader. There are parts of this Psalm that are prophetical to Jesus as well.
I. Call for Help (1-4) #
- The prayer is written in such as a way as to be made by the people for a king going to war. In David’s reign, much of the time was dedicated to war. It was a fitting Psalm for David’s day, and even after.
A. The Who to Call (1, 2, 5) #
i.“The LORD hear thee” – Prayers to God! (1) #
ii.Help comes from Zion – God (2) #
iii.“the LORD fulfill all thy petitions.” (5) #
B. The When to call (1)[ “in the day of trouble” ] #
i.When trouble strikes, God should be your speed dial #
ii.You recognize your weakness! (2) #
C. The Why you can call! (3, 4) #
i.Worship Him (3) #
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15–16)

II. Confidence Assured (5-7) #
A. The Witness in the Confidence (5) #
i.Rejoicing (5) #
“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” (1 Corinthians 15:54)
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)

B. Their word of Confidence (6) #
i.This is prophetic of the Savior! “Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed” (6) #

C. The Who of their confidence (7) #
i.Not Chariots or Horses! #
“The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.” (Proverbs 21:31)
ii.God was Who their faith was in! #
D. The Win of their confidence (8) #
