Principles to Live by #
Romans 14:1
I. We are the Lords! (1-8) #
A. Diets example (2-4) #
-
Vegetarian or not (2)
- Don't force it on others.
B. Days example (5-8) 5* #
- Holidays - passover, pentecost, feast of tabernacles, new moons etc.
Rom. 14:8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.
C. Disputes with Grace (1) #
- Verse one clearly lays the ground work for receiving people that are different, but not looking for disputes.
- This is NOT IN REGARD to sin.
- Some people want to take this as an occasion for the flesh, and sin.
Gal. 5:13 ¶ For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
-
People want to take this as an occasion to be fleshly and excuse clear principles in the Word of God.
- Alcohol, promiscuity, or licentiousness,
- God has NEVER been for the idea, ’live any way you want’, and God is ok with it!
II. We stand before the Lord (9-12) #
A. Authority of God - Lord of all (9) #
B. Authority is not ours! (10) #
-
We are not the final authority.
- You may have an opinion, but in the end, that is all it is, and God's is the final authority.
C. Authority established in God's Word (11-12) #
Rom. 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
1. If God is the Authority, then recognize, your brother will have to stand before God! #
- One of the most disappointing things about ministry, You cannot force people to do right!
2. Your brother stands before God, YOU will stand before God! #
- It would do us well, to live our life, very aware of the fact, that we will stand before God!
- I want to hear, "Well done thou good and faithful servant."
Luke 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
III. We are to live by faith! (13- (invitation) #
Rom. 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
A. Don't push an agenda (13) #
- Keeping in context, don't push people to become a vegetarian
- Don't push people to follow the Jewish dietary restrictions (14)
- Don't push people to follow the Jewish holy days
Rom. 14:18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
B. Peace (19-20) #
- Grace, is a great word for these verses!
21 - To eat meat or not?
- I believe the meat being referred to is meat, not considered clean for the Jew, and wine is simply grape juice. Nazarites were not even allowed to eat grapes, or raisins!
C. Faith (22-23) #
- You as a christian, have a responsibility to set what you believe can be done, or not!
