Getting into the Ministry #

Mark 1:9-11

Introduction

We are not out of the first chapter of Mark, and we see the beginning of Jesus ministry. The message is titled, “Getting into the Ministry” because there are many lessons that we can learn from Jesus getting started in the ministry. We all, every one of us should be involved in ministry! I’m not talking about being a preacher, I’m talking about getting involved in the ministry of our local church.

I. Jesus Baptized - Initiation (9-11) #

  • Jesus of course didn’t need to be saved.

A. Priority of Baptism - #

1. Set the example #

  • Jesus said:

John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

2. Sought to be baptized #

  • Jesus came seeking. (9-10)
  • Ethiopian eunch asked Philip, "what doth hinder me from being baptized"

Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

B. Picture of Baptism - #

1. Submersion in water (John 3:23) #

2. Symbol of Death, Burial, & Resurrection (Rom6:3-4) #

C. Pleasing in Baptism (10-11) #

  • Jesus baptism was a unique baptism, no other baptism is ever recorded like Jesus baptism.

1. “heavens opened” - intended to be a public display #

2. “Spirit like a dove descending upon him” #

  • Intended to verify the idea of baptism

3. We are commanded to baptize (Matt 28:19-20) #

II. Jesus Begins (12-15) #

A. Spirit led - Following God #

  • Led of the Spirit to the wilderness (12)

1. Jesus got alone with God “Spirit driveth” #

  • driveth means, urge strongly, or compel!
  • If Jesus was led into the wilderness alone with God, how much more do we need time alone with God!

B. Spiritual warfare (13) #

1. Jesus didn’t have a sinful flesh (no inward temptation) #

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

  • He would desire food (that was one of the temptations)

2. Tempted of Satan! #

1Pet. 5:8 ¶ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

C. Sermon (14-15) #

1. Preaching (14) - requires talking! #

2. Message (15) - Jesus preached repentance #

III. Jesus Beckons (16-20) #

A. Their Character (16, 19) #

1. Fishermen were ignorant people #

“^13^Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13)

2. Fishermen were tough #

  • It was Peter to cut off the ear of the guard in the garden when they came for Jesus.
  • James & John wanted Jesus to call fire down, destroy

3. Fishermen were tireless workers! #

“^5^And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5)

4. God is in the reforming business! #

“^13^But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Matthew 9:13)

B. Their Call (17, 20) #

1. Jesus calls “Come after me” (17) #

2. Jesus transforms “I will make you to become” (17) #

Rom. 12:1 ¶ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

C. Their Choice (18, 20) #

1. Forsake it all! #

  • What is keeping you from God?
  • Is it the physical wealth, pleasure, family?

2. Follow God! #

  • Why not give it all up, and follow Jesus!
  • He will take care of you! He is the GREAT shepherd
