Learning to Lean #
Psalm 27:1-14
Introduction
It is very possible this Psalm was written while David was a young man, placed in Saul’s kingdom. After he had killed Goliath, and Saul’s jealousy was unleashed on him. It is a bold Psalm, that opens with the idea of his confidence being placed squarely on God! When you consider the difficulty in David’s life, his hardship, his trials, it makes his faith and confidence that much sweeter.
Looking at this Psalm as a whole, the end result is “Learning to Lean on the LORD!” Faith, is something that doesn’t come naturally, and must grow in us. The longer you know someone, the more confidence, and trust you place in them. We see David, literally being cut off from everyone on the earth, and he learns to lean on the LORD in his life!
I. Confidence Modeled (1-3) #
A. Fearlessness Announced (1) #
1. Saved – When God is your salvation, your life is different! #
Matt. 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
2. Light - #
B. Former Attacks (2) #
1. Description #
2. Defense – they stumbled, and fell! #
C. Future (3) #
1. Not alone! #
- Syrian Host surrounded Elisha on the mts, (2 Kings 6:15-17)
2. Confidence placed in God! #
II. Choice Made (4-11) #
- Here, we see David expressing some choices he had made, which clearly show his desire.
A. Faithfulness (4) #
- David, for fear of his life, spent a great deal of time hidden, and running for his life.
- His desire to be in the Lord’s Temple! “dwell in the house of the LORD”
- He desired to pray in the Lord’s temple “to inquire in his temple.”
- He desired to be faithful to God, “all his days”
B. Focus (5-6) on God’s work, not bad circumstances #
1. Focus on God’s Work (5) #
- His focus, is on being hidden by God in vs 5
2. Focus on Praising God! (6) “therefore” #
-
Because of God’s blessing/hiding, care
-
Sacrifices of joy
- Has God blessed you? Do you sacrifice for Him
-
Singing – Praise the LORD, we ought to praise
-
C. Face to face with God (7-8) #
1. Plea – hear (7) #
2. Dialogue – God spoke to him, David replied, “Thy Face will I seek” (8) #
- David didn’t want a phone call, David wanted FaceTime! (NOT Apple Facetime)
- “Hide not thy face far from me” (9)
D. Follow God (10-11) #
1. It stings when family forsakes! Safety -forsook #
2. Teach – follow God’s Path! (11) #
III. Courage Mustered (12-14) #
A. Fierce enemy (12) #
1. Requesting Deliverance from, not to the enemy #
- We noted earlier the wickedness of the enemies!
2. Reality – The enemy is cruel, and wicked, and #
B. Fainting moment (13) #
1. He had #
- David was at the point of given up, letting go, and submitting to the worse outcome.
- It is easy to despair, and think the worse. (for some)
2. Believed Faith #
- “believed to see”
Heb. 11:1 ¶ Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
- David didn’t see it, he believed he would see it!
- Faith should keep us going!
C. Fortification (14) #
1. WAIT - #
-
Probably my least favorite word in the Bible!
- No one likes to wait… waiting is the activity…
- Expecting something to happen.
2. Be of good courage! #
- When you don’t want to wait, being positive while waiting is harder!
3. God shall strengthen thine heart! #
- It is often on the inside we need the strength & courage
- It is found in prayer, and HIS Word!
