Significance of the Resurrection #

1 Cor 15:12-15

Introduction

In the Book of Corinthians, Paul is writing the local church there in Corinth. They were saved, baptized believers in the local assembly.

1Cor. 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

Sometimes it is shocking to find professed christians have some very odd things they believe, that has no Bible basis. Yet, that is exactly what had happened in this church in Corinth! SAVED, BAPTIZED, BELIEVERS who belonged to this church in Corinth, were spreading false teaching saying, “there is no resurrection of the dead.”

1Cor. 15:12 ¶ Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

There it is in black and white! He quotes them. Paul of course straightens them out on this, and that is the subject of our message today, the IMPORTANCE of the RESURRECTION from the dead!

I. Scriptures Records it (1 Cor 15:13) #

A. Prophesy #

1. Of his death (1 Cor 15:3) #

Is. 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Psa. 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

2. Of His resurrection (1 Cor 15:4) #

Hos. 6:2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

Psa. 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

3. Jesus plainly said he would rise from the dead! #

Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

B. Plainly Record it! #

  • Matt 28:1-6

Mark 16:6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Luke 24:6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

1. The Scriptures prophesied it, plainly recorded it! #

C. Deny the resurrection is to deny Scripture! #

II. Salvation Requires it! (1 Cor 15:14) #

A. Preaching “then is our preaching vain” #

1. Our mission – global – we send 1,000s $ monthly! #

2. Our message? #

  • 1 Cor 15:3-4

Rom. 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom. 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

B. Personal Faith! “your faith is also vain” #

1. If Jesus didn’t raise from the dead, you could not be saved! #

III. Second Coming Reveals it! (1 Cor 15:18-19) #

  • “fallen asleep” = died.

A. Salvation in life #

B. Salvation in death #

Rom. 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

C. Saved in His Coming! (1 Cor 15:51-52) #
