Things the Lord hates! #

Proverbs 6:16-19

Intro. It is stated several times in the Bible that man has hated God! But no where in the Scripture will you find God hating man. You find quite the opposite!

“For [God so loved]{.underline} the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” (1 John 4:7–8)

It is really quite incredible how much God loves us! What is even more shocking, is the hatred that man shows God! The absolute despise, and disdain of mankind for God!

There are some things that God does hate. If we love God, there are things we ought to avoid, because we Love God!

I. Proud Look (17) - Satan (Isa 14) #

A. Me first mentality! #

Everyone of us has this inside of us, we ALL struggle w/pride

Thinking better of oneself then they ought to think

It was that thinking that got Cain into trouble!

Why was Abel’s sacrifice accepted… and not mine!

Able thinks he is better than me, I will show him!

B. Others last! #

Thinking less of others that they ought to think

In lines, driving, everywhere, that guy isn’t as important as I am.

C. No God! #

1. “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.” (Psalms 10:4)

   In Sunday school I learned, Jesus, Others, You, the way to spell JOY! There is no JOY when you put yourself above everything else!

II. Lying Tongue (17) - deceit #

A. Concealment, deceit. #

Most often lying is associated with wrong doing.

When someone does something wrong, the tendency is to cover it up! Conceal it, lie about it, mislead,

1. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

   Misleading is lying! Lie - an intentionally false statement

   No such thing as a ‘white lie’.

B. Satan the Father of lies #

1. “And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.” (Matthew 8:34)

   Lies, deceit, and half truth led to the condemnation of man!

2. “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost,…” (Acts 5:3)

III. Hands that shed innocent blood (17) #

A. Murder - is often hatred motivated by jealousy… pride #

Cain murdered Abel - pride (Gen 4)

David murdered Uriah the Hittite - coverup (2 Sam 11)

Jezebel murdered Naboth the Jezreelite - covetousness (1 Kings 21)

B. Abortion #

1. “And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.” (Exodus 1:16–17)

   The world thinks nothing of killing babies!

   Clearly we can see here that it is condemned by God!

   a) “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 18:21)

   Herod murdered babies, trying to kill Jesus! (Matt 2)
   

IV. Heart deviseth wicked imaginations (18) #

A. Wholly devoted to sin - #

1. “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5)

1. (Gen 6:5) - This prompted the destruction of the world! #

2. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” (Proverbs 23:7)

B. Thoughts, focus on bad #

1. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

V. Feet that be swift in running to mischief (18) #

A. Swift #

Some people are very quick at getting into trouble!

a) “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” (James 1:14)

Whatever they want, they go after!

Drugs, alcohol, fun, fortune, fame, what ever it is... they case
after it, and let nothing stand in the way!

Swift to shed blood!

Talking of a sinner in Romans 3, it says:

b) “Their feet are swift to shed blood:” (Romans 3:15)

#1 reason for abortion, it would ruin their career.

B. Sin! #

Sin comes so naturally, someone who is saved, should not be swift to running to sin!

1. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

VI. A false witness that speaketh lies (19) #

A. Slander - #

Definition: A false tale or report maliciously uttered, and tending to injure the reputation of another by lessening him in the esteem of his fellow citizens.

1. “Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.” Ps 101:5

2. “He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.” (Proverbs 10:18)

   Defamation of character!

   I’m grateful, we never had roast preacher for our Sunday afternoon diner!

   My parents taught me not to talk about people!

   “Men and women range themselves into three classes or orders of intelligence; you can tell the lowest class by their habit of always talking about persons; the next by the fact that their habit is always to converse about things; the highest by their preference for the discussion of ideas.” - Henry Thomas Buckle - English Historian

   In the late 1800’s Samuel Miller, a presbyterian professor at Princeton said much of the same thing.

3. “And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, [not slanderers]{.underline}, sober, faithful in all things.” (1 Timothy 3:10–11)

   a) Comes from the Greek word, diablos, where we get our English word, devils!

   b) The devil is the biggest slander of all times!

   A slanderer would never think of shedding innocent blood, but
   they would think nothing of destroying an innocent person with
   their tongue!
   

VII. He that Soweth discord among brethren! (19) #

A. Soweth #

Sometimes it is just a seed…

It doesn’t have to be full slander, it can just be dropping the right word here or there that causes strife!

Kids know just the right words to say to stir up their siblings!

B. Discord - disagreement, strife, to set at opposition #

This mentality of if he is your friend, then you are not my friend is juvenile at best!

There is no reason to cause people to divide friendships!

It is jealousy, envy, manipulative, and causes strife!

God hates sowing of discord!

C. Among brethren #

Those who agree!

This is pure carnality!

1. “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” (1 Corinthians 3:3)

“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13)

“For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.” (Isaiah 61:8)
