Blessing the LORD #

Psalm 103:1-5

Introduction

We are drawing to a close of book number 4 of the Psalms. These last few Psalms close with praise to God. Many Psalms are prayers, complaints, and crying to the Lord, these are more about praise God for who He is.

I. God’s Personal Blessings - Reasons for Praise (1-5) #

• Starts off with a hearty blessing… this is not merely a lip service praise, but a praise with the entirety of his being, even down to his soul!
• A blessed NAME! (1)
    ◦ Bless his holy name… people profane his name today… but his name is Holy and Blessed!

Isaiah 9:6 — For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

• Don’t forget… (2)
    ◦ It is easy to forget the blessings of God in our life!
    ◦ We need reminded of his blessings!!!

A. He Forgives (3) #

i. To be forgiven for wrong doing, is awesome! It is freeing! #

ii. “all thine iniquities” – no a few select ones! #

    ◦ Hidden, most secret initquities
    ◦ Hideous, most vial iniquities
    ◦ Hurtful – most hostile, hateful iniquities

B. He Heals (3) #

i. WE are not just forgiven, we are healed! #

Isaiah 53:5 — But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. ◦ Healing is a process in which something damaged is made whole ◦ God makes your life so much better than it ever was before!

ii. “all thy diseases” #

    ◦ This is obviously poetical, but in all reality, God does make us better!

C. He Redeemed (4) #

• Redeem – to buy back

i. Price of redemption #

    ◦ Jesus bought us with his precious blood!

1 Peter 1:18–19 —18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

ii. Penalty without redemption… “from destruction” #

Matthew 10:28 —28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. • If you are saved, you are not going to spend eternity in a fiery place called hell! ◦ Song, “I’m not going to hell” – We don’t have to fear death!

D. He Crowns (5) #

i. With lovingkindness #

    ◦ You cannot earn God’s loving kindness… he loves you, he crowns you with it!

ii. Tender mercies #

    ◦ Mercy is not getting what you deserve.
    ◦ God blesses us in spite of ourselves!
    ◦ Every one of us mess up, and sin daily… God is merciful!

E. He Satisfies (5) #

• The world cannot satisfy you!
• People have searched the world for riches, pleasure, power, control, popularity… and found it cannot satisfy!

i. God’s people fear him! (11, 13, 17) #

    ◦ God shows mercy, not to the perfect… but those who strive to fear and obey Him!
    ◦ Many simply do not fear, or obey Him!

D. God understands our weakness (13-17) #

i. Father – pities his child (13) #
