Lessons about Salvation & Service #
Mark 9:30-50
I. Salvation’s Plan (Mark 9:30-32) #
A. Dissemination of information (30) #
i. Possibly, because of his popularity, they would have protected him. #
ii. Private teaching to the disciples. #
◦ Having a personal relationship with Jesus… get something others are not.
◦ Your personal walk with the Lord is important! -
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
B. Delivered (31) “delivered into the hands of men” #
• The Words that Jesus uses, are always the right words… He IS THE WORD! (John 1)
i. Delivered was a prophetic portion #
Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? ◦ Jesus was literally delivered by Judas Iscariot into the hands of the Jews. Isaiah 53:7 —7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
◦ The prophecy of God is amazing!
C. Death & Resurrection (31) #
• That is why Jesus came… not to establish a physical kingdom, but to give his life a ransom for many!
• Jesus wanted his disciples to know the whole plan… to die and raise again in 3 days!
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
D. Disciples misunderstanding (32) #
i. The jews commonly believed the Messiah would setup his kingdom #
◦ The disciples believed Jesus was the Messiah (which He IS.)
ii. Prophetic interpretation was simply missed. #
◦ God doesn’t always give us the full picture.
Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
iii. His prophetic instruction didn’t fit into their picture, but they couldn’t ask him. #
II. Service Prioritized (Mark 9:33-35) #
A. Disputing (33-34) #
• I have spent time traveling in a vehicle for hours… they walked for hours, and before cell phones, you would talk, or discuss, or argue.
B. Domineering (34) #
• There is a desire to be superior to others, and tell them what to do – they disputed that.
• This was foolish, so when Jesus asked them… you could hear a pin drop! Not a word!
C. Desire (35) #
• Jesus waste no time, and cuts straight to the heart of the issue: desire of the heart!
Pro 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
• This then leads straight into the simplicity of Faith… and will be continued
• Be a SERVANT – that is being Christ like!
Matthew 20:25-28
III. Simple Faith (36-37) #
• Salvation is not works, church membership, taking communion, being baptized according to the Bible… it is receiving Christ.
A. Admit sin! #
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ◦ If you cannot confess, and realize you are a sinner, then you deceive yourself. 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
B. Believe #
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
C. Confess #
Romans 10:9–10 —9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
IV. Scrutiny of Offense (38-49) #
Offend – NOT feelings hurt… 1. to attack, 2. to make angry 3. to shock, wound 4. to pain, annoy, injure 5. to transgress to violate (laws) 6. to cause to fall, or stumble 7. to draw to evil
A. Be careful of Dominance - haughtiness, pride (38-40) – Your job is not policing the world, and every religious movement. #
B. Be careful of Discouraging – offending young ones (41) – word or deed #
C. Be careful of Deceiving yourself (42-49) #
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
