The God of gods #

Psalm 82:1-8

Introduction

We have a Psalm of rebuke, or admonition. Not all Psalms or songs are that of praise to God, but can as we have before us, be a psalm/song of rebuke, or admonition.

I. The Authority of God (1, 8) #

A. His Prominence #

  • Demonstrated in two ways:

1. “standing” - #

2. “he judgeth” – He has the final say! They ultimately must stand before Him! #

B. The People “among the gods” #

1. Clarification of context (v6) #

  • The word “gods” is not used to indicate a deity, but rather signifying the authority given to man. Verse 6-7 make that very clear.

Rom. 13:1 ¶ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Psa. 62:11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

C. His Position (8) #

1. Thoughts of men #

In the 1800’s Lord Acton said, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”

2. Final judgement (Rev 20:11-15) #

II. The Assessment of the gods (2-5) #

A. Examination (2) “how long” #

B. Expectation (3-4) #

1. Defend the poor & fatherless! #

2. Do justice to the afflicted and needy #

3. Deliver the poor and needy #

C. Execution (5) #

1. Willingly ignorant! “They know not, neither will they understand” #

2. Walking in dark “they walk in darkness” #

3. Wonky World! truths become messed up! #

III. The Admonishment (6-7) #

A. Promotion from God (6) “I have said” #

B. Preeminence of God (6) “you are children” #

C. Passing of man (7) “But ye shall die like men” #

1. Time of power and influence is limited! #
