Anger #

Proverbs 19:19

Introduction

We need to be careful that we do not paint anger or wrath as a bad thing. Anger is an emotion that is felt.

Eph. 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil.

God is holy, and without sin. Yet, he has wrath, and anger.

I. Anger without Discretion (Pro 19:19) #

Prov. 19:19 ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

  • Discretion – Prudence, or knowledge and prudence; that discernment which enables a person to judge critically of what is correct and proper, and primarily regarding ones own conduct.

A. Emotional control (Angry actions) #

  • Anger usually drives a reaction that isn’t right.
  • Someone does something that makes you angry, you usually react in a bad way.

James 1:19 ¶ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

B. Punishment for poor decisions “shall suffer” #

  • I will never forget a man in Peru, in his anger, he pulled a gun and shot and killed a man.

    • His life changed! -
  • Helping that man requires more than a bail out. “… if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.”

Prov. 25:28 ¶ He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

II. Anger with Discretion (Proverbs 19:11) #

Prov. 19:11 ¶ The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

A. Defer – to delay; to put off; to postpone (11a) #

  • The action of delaying or putting off our anger, is ruling our own spirit, or controlling the anger we feel.
  • Sometimes that is the hardest part. If you can stop and think.. most of the time, we wouldn’t do something foolish.
  • You can control your anger! - kids often times will react, as adults, part of the maturity process is learning to not lash out, out of anger and rage.

Gal. 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

B. Forgiveness (11b) #

“The thought is not of covering up sin. But rather of having a forgiving spirit when another falls.” - David Sorenson

  • No where in the Bible is sin ever covered up, and swept aside.
  • Once sin is acknowledged, it becomes a great tribute to that person, to forgive an offense.

III. A King’s wrath (12) #

Prov. 19:12 ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

A. Subjects, didn’t cross a king #

  • Solomon didn’t live in a democracy, where the people decide the law of the land.
  • The King decided the law of the land.
  • The people didn’t cross the king, or look to invoke the anger of the king.
  • In Proverbs, kings are referenced as honorable, and not wicked.
  • We are talking about righteous wrath.
  • Prov. 14:35 ¶ The king’s favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.
  • Prov. 16:14 ¶ The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.

B. The King (God) #

  • Rom. 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
  • God’s wrath will be poured out
  • Rev. 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
  • As christians we are saved from this wrath, however we still should keep our life in check, and seek the FAVOUR, and blessi
  • ng of God in our life!
  • Prov. 19:12 ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
