The Plan for Praise #
Psalm 98
Introduction
As I studied it, and outlined it, everything seemed so familiar, and in glancing back, I was able to see the resemblance of Psalm 95. Clearly it is in the Bible twice, and so apparently God thought we needed it twice. The outline is not the same, as the passage is not the same. There are similarities, but it’s layout is indeed unique.
I. Purpose of Praise (1-3) #
• These verses clearly layout that we are to praise the LORD, and gives us all the reasons to praise the Lord!
A. Announce his Ability (1) #
i. “He hath done marvellous things” #
• Marvellous – wonderful, strange, exciting
• In the Psalms, we see frequently, they sing of being led out of Egypt! – it was truly a marvellous thing!
• Your salvation is truly a marvelous thing!
ii. He “hath gotten… the victory” #
a) By his right hand #
Exodus 15:6 - “6 Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.”
• The right hand of God, stands for power, and strength!
• Some required some serious work of God to get them out of the problems of life!
b) By his ‘holy’ arm – Don’t ever underestimate the power of holiness! #
B. Announce his Accomplishments (2) #
i. “made known his salvation” #
ii. “His righteousness hat he openly shewed” #
◦ Righteousness is something that needs openly displayed, and lived!
C. Announce his Attributes (3) #
i. He doesn’t forget his promises “he hath remembered” #
ii. He is a merciful God! #
iii. He gives us truth (His Word) #
iv. He wants man to hear! “All the ends of the earth have seen” #
II. Plan for Praise (4-6) #
A. Attitude of our Praise (4) #
• While this may seem to be an unneeded point, it is certainly addressed here.
i. Joyfully! #
◦ Praise, by and large is to be positive, joyful, uplifting, and encouraging!
◦ That is probably why praise goes with preaching, you are all encouraged, just before God speaks to your heart and shows you some things that need attention!
ii. Loudly #
◦ When I think of loudly, I think of unashamed! Someone loudly proclaiming God’s goodness!
Luke 9:26 - “26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.”
Romans 1:16 - “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
◦ The world stands up for their cause, and proclaims their business, and makes their voice heard… as Christians, we have much more to stand up for!
B. Accessories to our Praise (5-6) #
i. Harp #
ii. Trumpets #
iii. Cornet – 1 time in Psalms! Also, used in the Temple worship as the Ark was brought #
• I have never seen a person just pickup an instrument, and play it, that has not spent time in practice, preparation, and work.
• People play instruments for money all the time!
iv. Voice #
III. Promise of Praise (7-9) #
A. The Assembly for Praise (7-8) #
i. “Fulness thereof” (7) #
ii. “They that dwell therein” (7) #
iii. “together” (8) #
Revelation 19:6 - “6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
iv. “Before the Lord” (9) #
• This assembly will be gathered together before the Lord!
• What an incredible time of praise that will be!
