Romans 2:17

Motive Matters #

Romans 2:17-20

1Sam. 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

I. The Privilege (17-20) #

A. The Calling (17) #

1. Abraham called out (Gen 12:1-2) #

Gen. 12:1 ¶ Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

2Cor. 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

2. Jacob called ISRAEL - #

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

B. The Comprehension (knowledge) (18) #

1. “knowest his will” - #

  • The will of God is contained within the Word of God!

    • The Holy Spirit will NEVER GUIDE you contrary to His Word!

C. The Confidence (19-20) #

1. Danger for new – overconfidence (trust your self) #

2. Danger for old – overconfident – image made #

II. The Puffed up Pride (21-24) #

A. Stealing (21) #

1. Mal 3:7-9 – This passage is often used in churches, but it was given to Israel before it ever was used in church. #

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

2. To the church #

1Cor. 16:1 ¶ Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

B. Sacrilege (22) #

  • Sacrilege – the crime of violating or profaning sacred things

1. Adultery – your body (1 Cor 6:18*, 19-20) #

C. Sanctimoniousness (23-24) “hypocrisy” #

Sanctimonious - the action or practice of acting as if one were morally superior to other people:

1. Blaspheme – Lev 24:11-16 – son that blasphemed the name of the Lord #

  • Living a lie, is blaspheme to the Lord!

III. The Proclamation (25-29) #

A. The Outward Show (25) #

Circumcision – the removing of the foreskin of males

1. Established by God #

Gen. 17:11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

2. This was a private thing, but outwardly spoken of #

3. A token symbol to the Jew #

4. “thy circumcision is made uncircumcision” #

B. The Obedience in heart (26-27) #

1. If the gentile (uncircumcised) keep the law (that he himself has within his conscience)… it helps him out! #

  • Understand that we are not saved by works, but there is more value in God’s eyes, a person than someone who claims Jewishness, and lives wickedly! (27)

C. The Overt Truth (28-29) #

1. The content of the heart matters more than the works of the flesh! #

***1 Sam 16:7 - ...*the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
