Introduction to Revelation #

Revelation 1:4-20

Introduction

All of this is still introductory material, before he gets down to the message to the churches. There is so much packed in these verses, I simply will not cover it all. The depth of the material is simply too great. You MUST take time to read over it, and get insight on it.

Last week, we briefly noted:

Proverbs 1:7

December 19, 2018

Proverbs 1:7-9

Intro.

This probably should have been tagged on the last passage that we studied, and included with that section.

I. Authority of God (7) #

A. Fear of the Lord #

1. This is a phrase that is used in the Bible 30x, it is used 14x in the book of Proverbs. So it is an important phrase to understand. #
2. fear - 1: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger 2: anxious concern : solicitude 3: profound reverence and awe especially toward God 4: reason for alarm : danger #
3. Two Hebrew words, pachad, and yirah. We have one English word. After examining the usages of the word, it is clear that yirah is a reverence for God, while pachad is a fear as in afraid. #
4. Motivation from fear of pending judgment is not the purest motivational tool. #
5. Motivation from reverence is the right motivational tool in our Christian service. #
6. 2 Chr 19:5-9 - Both motivate #
7. v7 - pachad - FEAR that you do justly, don’t take bribes #
8. v9 - yirah - REVERENCE that you serve God out of reverence, faithfully, perfect heart! #
9. Pachad - FEAR - Isaiah 2:10-21 - 10,19, 21 - pending doom #
10. Yirah - REVERENCE #
11. Ps 19:9 - Clean, everlasting… we will not live in heaven in ‘fear, afraid of pending judgement’ but in reverence. #
12. Ps 111:10 - Beginning of wisdom #
  1. Context is key!
13. FEAR breeds a desire to hide, and flee the pending wrath, whereas REVERENCE breeds a desire to serve in loyalty and awe! #
14. Without that REVERENCE for the creator, and recognition of the GREATNESS and power of God, you will not get knowledge. #
15. The devil falsifies knowledge with a rejection of God, and the creator… Evolution, gender neutral. #
16. An acknowledging reverence of God Almighty is fundamental to forward movement! Any "advancement" without that is fake, errant. #

B. Folly of the Fool #

1. Fools would rather forge their own path. #
2. Fools are wise in their own eyes, and therefore despise instruction and wisdom! No one is going to tell me what to do! #
  1. Prov. 22:15 ¶ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
3. Every child is born with that ‘foolish' nature inside of them, that wants to overthrow authority, and carve their own path. #

II. Authority of Parents (8) #

Eph. 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

Mark 1:35

Lessons from our Lord #

Mark 1:35-45

Introduction

Last time, we looked at Jesus Authority. Authority with the Scriptures, Authority over spirits, and Authority over sickness. He should be our Authority! We are going to look at lessons that we can learn from the Lord!

I. Lessons of Prayer (35) #

  • Prayer was an important part of Jesus life.
  • Prayer is talking with God, poor out your heart and soul, make requests and petitions, talk with him!

A. Start of the day "rising up a great while before day" #

1. Ministry - service #

  • We are saved to serve... so every christian should be ministering!
  • Requires effort, get up!

2. Start the day with the Lord! #

  • Before you get busy with everything, before the people gathered around him.

B. Solitary place "solitary place" #

1. Need to be alone with God! #

2. Quite place - no distractions #

  • Shut off the social media, set your phone to silent

“10\ Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

Psalm 13

From Darkness to Delight #

Psalm 13:1-6

Introduction

David’s life is recorded for us in great detail. He is a well known character in the Bible, and history. Lockyer describes him in this way:

“Volumes have been written on the trials and triumphs of David, a mountain peak among Bible characters, who was carefully chosen as Israel’s second king by God Himself.” – All the Men of the Bible - pg 89. Lockyer

Romans 4:17

Faith Wins #

Romans 4:18-25

Introduction

I had mentioned earlier that this portion was Justification by the Resurrection,, Paul certainly closes with that statement, I don’t think it is the focus of these verses. Paul spends a lot of time on the faith in these verses. Faith tends be the focal point of these verses. We are going to look at the fact that Faith Wins tonight.

These verses closely resemble the verses in Hebrews 11, which is labeled the ‘Hall of Faith’ by many. It is a phenomenal chapter which covers faith extraordinarily in the Scripture.

Proverbs 1:10

Advice for a Son #

Pro 1:10-19

Intro.

We can see the advice coming from a fatherly figure, trying to counsel his son, and help him as he goes through life. As we read this, it is often applied to young people, but it is certainly not exclusively for young people. As we march through different stages in our life, there are certainly times when we will face temptation such as is described here. It would do us all well to pay attention to what is written, and keep it in our heart to protect our way.

Psalm 14

October 26, 2022 #Psalm of Warning

Psalm 14

Introduction

You may not notice, but this Psalm is given to us twice. It is recorded in almost exactness to Psalm 53.

This is more of a Psalm that contemplates the wickedness of evil people, warns of the evil works, and ends in a cry for salvation!

Col. 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Romans 5:1

Consequences of Justification #

Romans 5:1-5

Introduction

Paul has been spent a long time throughly and clearly presenting Justification by faith. He is now going to give us a The Consequences of Justification, the Causes of Justification, the Comparison in Justification and the contrasts in Justification.

Tonight we will see clearly the blessed consequences of Justification. These should be a great encouragement to every child of God!

I. Peace with God (1) “we have peace” #

A. Claiming of peace “by faith” #

  • If it hasn’t been stated enough, or emphatically enough, it is once again clarified here: “by faith”

Proverbs 1:20

January 17, 2019

Advice for the Simple and Scorners #

Pro 1:20-23

Intro.

In the last verses we were able to see the advice from a father to a son, in this passage we can see the advice for a simple person, as well as a scorner. There is a real contrast in the idea of a relationship between a father and son, and that of wisdom, and the simple, scorner, or fool. A father deals has a great deal of interest and love for his son, as does a son for his father. The same cannot be said of a simple person, a scorner, or a fool!

Psalm 15

Who’s going to Dwell with God? #

Psalm 15:1-5

I. Residence with the LORD (1) #

A. Who is addressed? #

B. What? #

i.Abide – rest, dwell, remain stay #

ii.Dwell – abide as a permanent resident, inhabit, continue. #

C. Where? #

i.Heaven; we often comment on the splendors of it. #

ii.Tabernacle – holy of holies #

iii.Holy Hill – #

  • The City of David, is located just south of Jerusalem, and lies lower than Mount Moriah… I believe that is what David referred to as the Holy Hill,

2Chr. 3:1 ¶ Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
