Mark 10:28-31 - read Mark 10:28-45
Introduction
We are going to cover down through verse 45, but let’s look at this passage. This passage takes place right after the young rich man had asked what he could do to inherit eternal life. We looked at that last week, and recognized the man did not see himself as a sinner in need of salvation, but was simply seeking to add to his riches, eternal life. Right after that whole discussion, Peter; never one to let a quite moment pass without interjecting something, says, “Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.”
I. Peter’s Proclamation (28-31) #
A. Babbling #
i. Pointing out the obvious #
Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
ii. Proving himself #
◦ Peter was fishing for affirmation that they had done right.
B. Blessings of serving the Lord (29-31) #
i. Not negligence (29) #
• There was a prominent idea of heavily investing in the ministry, to the neglect of the family… it was not right. Jesus was not saying that was a right thing to do. • It is never right to do wrong to do right. Neglecting family is wrong. • Some won’t do ministry for the sake of the family ◦ Go to the mission field? Leave your father, mother? …. that is not neglect, that is Biblical. When you get married, you are to leave your home, and cleave to the new home created!
ii. Great blessing pronounced (30) #
• Those who sacrifice, and go serve the Lord in far away places. ◦ Priority of serving the Lord, over comfort of self…. Persecutions.
iii. Many prominent people (31) #
• Many people prioritize comfort, and popularity over serving the Lord. • Jesus said, We are going to be surprised in Heaven who is honored.
II. Prophetic Proclamation (32-34) #
• Jesus covered this in Mark 9:31 – they were not getting it. • Prophesied in Isaiah 53
Isaiah 53:3–5 —3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
A. Delivered (go to Mark 14) #
Mark 14:43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
B. Condemned #
Mark 14:63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
C. Delivered to Gentiles #
Mark 15:1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
i. Mockery #
Mark 15:15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
ii. Cruelty #
Mark 15:17–20 —17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
D. Death #
Mark 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
E. Resurrection #
Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
III. Prominent Request (35-45) #
A. Simple Request (35-41) #
i. Ignorant – This was a fleshly request #
B. Selfish Request #
• 2nd time arguing over prominence. (Mark 9:34 “…they had disputed… who should be greatest”) • In Matthew it says the Mother made this request… however, it was the boys that put their mother up to it.
i. Stop and think before asking things of the Lord. #
C. Servanthood Reiterated #
Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
