Psalm 6:1-10

Pride causes contention because one cannot admit they are wrong.

Prov. 11:2 ¶ When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

Pride causes a fall because stubbornness to admit they are wrong.

Prov. 16:18 ¶ Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride brings one low!

Prov. 29:23 ¶ A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

A contrite spirit is:

I. Humble (1)

A. Rebuke (1)

Prov. 13:1 ¶ A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

2Tim. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

B. Chastening (1)

Heb. 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

A contrite spirit recognizes:

A. Weakness “I am weak”

B. Mercy (imperfect) Flawed “have mercy on me”

A contrite spirit needs:

Psa. 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

A contrite spirit recognizes the:

A contrite spirit is:

V. Hurt by sin (6-7)

A. Wanting it gone (6, 7) “weary with my groaning” “waxeth old” (7) B. Weeping over sin (6)

A contrite spirit:

A. Despise it in his own life

A contrite spirit is:

VII. Heard (8-9)

A. Calls to God! You cannot be heard if you never call

B. God listens!

Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
