Many messages have been written and preached on verses 6-7. I love studying a passage with the whole context, and especially when there are verses so familiar and used. It is refreshing to see them in context. Sometimes it is enlightening to find out they don’t mean what people have used them for.

I. If you
are truly born again, you are going to struggle with sin. Lost people do
NOT STRUGGLE with sin! It doesn’t bother them to get high, drunk, or
live a sinful life. They live that way on a regular basis, without
concern.

Some people have been taught certain things are morally wrong.
Therefore, they try not to do things, because they are smitten by their
conscience from what their mom and dad have taught them. But as society
decays, and normal slides, so does morality. Paul really covered that in
the first few chapters of Romans. Societal rules become a guide of right
and wrong.

Mark 7:1 - Defining the Final Authority

Defining the Final Authority

Mark 7:1-13

Introduction

We have a showdown again between Jesus and the Pharisees. They simply
cannot leave well enough alone the Lord Jesus Christ. He was winning the
hearts of the people, and they were being left behind. Their influence,
their position, their authority, was all being threatened by Jesus
presence.

These were not interested in truth, they were interested in maintaining
their prestige, the position, and their prominence among the people.

Proverbs 7:1

August 14, 2019

Importance of the Word

Proverbs 7:1-5

Intro.

These first few verses stress the importance of the Word of God. It started with the Blind man seeing men as trees after Jesus touched him the first time. We equated that to many things we do not understand here in our life time. But soon after, he was touched again, and made completely whole! The very next section Jesus is asking his disciples who do men say that I am….. Jesus makes it very clear to his disciples that He is the Christ, the Messiah. They of course said that about him as well. But they didn’t fully understand the implications of that.

Mark 9:14 - Growing in Faith

October 5, 2025

Growing in Faith

Mark 9:14-29

Introduction

We have been following the life of Christ, and specifically his interactions with the disciples. This passage takes place right after the young rich man had asked what he could do to inherit eternal life. We looked at that last week, and recognized the man did not see himself as a sinner in need of salvation, but was simply seeking to add to his riches, eternal life. Right after that whole discussion, Peter; never one to let a quite moment pass without interjecting something, says, “Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.”

Mark 11:1 - The Triumphal Entry

January 11, 2026

Triumphal Entry

Mark 11:1-6

Introduction

We are a couple of months early for Palm Sunday, but the Sunday before Easter is called Palm Sunday. It is often referred to as the triumphal entry. It was one of the only times that Jesus allowed public prominent praise of himself. Jesus certainly is worthy of worship, but he often did not allow it, and maintained a low profile as best as he could. Jesus did not come to be lifted up as King, but came as a sacrifice.

Psalm 117 - Prescription for Praise

April 29, 2026

Prescription for Praise

Psalm 117:1-2

Introduction

We have a short Psalm before us, but it is not without content. The words may be few, but the content is great. The Psalm may be short, but there is no shortage of content. Praise is certainly prescribed in this Psalm. It is one of the Psalms that ends in the phrase, “Praise ye the LORD” It most definitely was sung as a part of worship. It probably was a Psalm that was sung in the opening of closing of worship, and probably sung regularly. There are three notable things about this Psalm that I want to point out.

Psalm 119:9 - Success in the Christian Life

June 24, 2026

Success in Christian Life

Psalm 119:9-16

Introduction

What is Success in the Christian life? What do I mean by that, I think success in the christian life should be defined by a genuine, sincere walk with the Lord, in which the christian grows, and develops a deep relationship with Jesus Christ. You can call it spirituality, success, a truly genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, but whatever words you use to define that, I’m calling that a successful christian life.

Psalm 119:17 - Recognizing God’s Role

July 1, 2026

Recognizing God’s Role

Psalm 119:17-24

Introduction

While the entirety of Psalm 119 is about the Word of God, it is not absent of other topics. The Word of God is tied to many subjects. We learned last week, the Word of God is essential to maintain a clean, spiritual life.

Tonight, I want to notice the involvement of God as he interacts with those who acknowledge His Word. I like the phrase, “God’s Word”. In Psalm 119, it frequently shows up with the possessive adjective “thy” which means it belongs to God. You see that frequently in the Psalm. The Bible is God’s, not man’s. It is God’s Word that makes a difference in our life, not my words, not your words, not Shakespeare’s words. All words can have an influence and impact, but not have the impact that God’s Word makes!

Psalm 119:25 - The Struggle is Real

July 8, 2026

The Struggle is Real

Psalm 119:25-32

Introduction

The first verse sets the tone of this section:

Psalm 119:25 — My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

The Psalmist opens with the weakness and sorrow of his flesh, and his need to be quickened. The Word quicken means to make alive, to revive, or to make alive in a spiritual sense. The flesh, and this world will bring sorrow! Living in the flesh will bring sorrow, as the Psalmist describes. The world often tries to drown that sorrow with alcohol. They try to hide from that sorrow with drugs, pleasure, and many other things. The problem is that all of those solutions are temporary, and only hide that sorrow for a short time. The only real hope, is turning to God, and being quickened, made alive by Him! Asking him to save us!

Psalm 119:72 - Goodness of God

August 12, 2026

Goodness of God

Psalm 119:72

Introduction

Every portion of this chapter has been of great value and help. Today, we are going to learn about God speaking to us!

I will never forget, I was in college, and working with kids in Jr. Church. A couple of the boys needed to go to the bathroom, so we walked to the main bathroom. When we got in there, there was a speaker in the bathroom, and you could hear the preacher in the main auditorium over the sound system. All of the boys got quiet and the preacher over the speaker was clear. One of those boys blurted out, “God is that you?” to the voice he heard over the speaker. I will never forget that boy asking that in the bathroom that day. The reality is God does want to speak to you, but he doesn’t speak today with an audible voice to use. He has given us all we need to know in his Word!
