Before discussing differences between Spanish Bible versions, we must first answer an even more fundamental question:

What does the Bible say about itself?

Welcome to the Spanish Bible Podcast, a podcast for English speakers who want to better understand the Spanish Bible. Whether you’re preparing for ministry, learning Spanish, or simply curious about how God’s Word has been translated into one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, you’re in the right place. Welcome back to the Spanish Bible Podcast. Today we’re going to discuss something that I believe is very important. We’re going to get a little bit into Scripture. I know I’ve been laying a lot of background work, a lot of ground foundation. I know I’ve been laying a lot of foundational ground work, and this is even part of that foundational ground work. But we’re going to talk about the preservation of Scriptures. And it boils down to either you believe the Word of God or you don’t believe the Word of God. And you don’t have to take my word for it. I don’t expect you to take my word for it. I wouldn’t ask you to take my word for it. I’m going to show you the Word of God, what the Word of God says about itself. And you take these verses, and you think about them, and you think about how important they are. And so Proverbs chapter 30, verses 5 and 6. And of course, this is in the King James Bible. And you can go back and review another episode that I talked about the King James Bible. But here’s what it says. Every word of God is pure. He is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Now, that’s pretty clear. If you just stop, maybe you even ought to pause the audio or video of this and think about that verse just for a little bit. Just meditate upon it. Think about what it means. The Bible says that every word of God is pure. And so we know. In 2 Timothy, of course, it talks about the inspiration of the Word of God. But we’re talking about the purity and the preservation of the Word of God. And God put an emphasis on the fact that every single word is pure. That’s really important for us to understand. It also goes on, and it says, add thou not unto his words. We’re not talking about preaching. We’re not talking about application. We’re not talking about understanding the Word of God. We’re talking about the physical words of God. You are not to take your Bible and rewrite them and add words in. We’ll find another passage. You’re not to remove words either. Those two things are very, God is very strict about that. And there’s many verses in the Bible that cover that. Now, let me just interject this here because I do have a thought about accidental omission. I have written Scripture for a long time, not written it in that God gave it to me. I just copy Scripture. I’ve done that for a long time. And in copying Scripture, I have, at one point, I was memorizing Scripture. What I used to do is I’d write it out. And I wrote it all out on a three-by-five card, memorized it word for word, got down to the test. I wrote it word for word, got it wrong on the test. I was so upset. I went back and I looked at my three-by-five card. I wrote it identically to what I had done on my three-by-five card. But you know what? I made a mistake on my three-by-five card, and it wasn’t copied correctly out of the Word of God. That was an accidental addition or omission. Those are scribal errors. I’m not talking about scribal errors, non-intentional errors. But I’m talking about deliberate removal and addition. Of words. You can study out the changes of the text. And there’s information going all the way back to the early, early days when Scripture was written. And some of the people that manipulated Scripture, they literally did not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ. And they made changes. What happened to those changes? Well, in those texts, those were set aside. Because… Because the church knew these aren’t right. The apostle, the original, the first churches recognized, hey, these are wrong. And so they didn’t use them. That’s the kind of error I’m talking about. The addition or removal or omission of things from God’s Word. We’re not talking about teaching or preaching or those kind of things. Revelation 22, verses 18 and 19 say this. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book. If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book. And so we find another verse right in the book of Revelation that God made it very plain that words should never be added to God’s words nor taken away from God’s words. He was very crystal clear on that. He said, hey, I don’t want those things added to my Bible or taken away from my Bible. And that is the exact thing that we are going to look at in the Spanish Bible. By the way, this is not just a Spanish Bible issue. This is an English Bible issue. This is an every language Bible issue. Because any Bible that is incorporating or adding readings from the critical text, they’re going to have additions or removals. And we’re not just talking a little bit. As I mentioned before, 8,000 differences in that book that I had shown in a previous podcast. And so this becomes very important. The amount of words that were added, the amount of words that were taken away would, I forget, I looked it up one time, would be the equivalent of one of the very smaller books of the Bible. But you don’t just pull those out and say, well, my Bible is the same. No, God put it a priority and an emphasis on every word. Psalms 12, 6 and 7. The words of the Lord are pure words. As silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord. Thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever. God has promised to preserve his word. He put a high premium and said, do not add to my words. Do not take away from my words. Matthew 5, 18. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. And so God made a very important point. He’s saying all of my word is important. Both the Old Testament, the New Testament, words are not to be added to. Words are not to be taken away from my book. It is to be complete. Every word, matter of fact, every jot. Every tittle. That is the smallest part of a letter. If you take the letter I and you erase the dot off of it, that would be a dot or a tittle. And that would change the letter. It would be mistaken for an L. If you take an L and you erase a partial line there, it would look like an I. If you take an O and you erase part of it, then you would make it look like a U. And so you could go on and on about how letters could be changed. But the very fact that God said, hey, every jot and every tittle would be preserved and would not pass away until all would be fulfilled. Well, how do we know if it’s fulfilled if we don’t know where the word of God is? And so we think, hey, we have to say this applies to the word of God today. There’s people out there who are advocating. You need to read the ESV, the ASV, the NIV, the ESV. Every other Bible to get a complete picture of the word of God. Where is the Bible? Well, we happen to believe that we have it for the English speaking people in the King James Bible. And it’s not that difficult. And the critical texts have added to or taken away from the word of God. That’s what it all boils down to. That little point right there. And it does not matter what language, the Bible is written in the words when they are taken from the critical text and added to or taken away from the Spanish Bible or the English Bible causes a problem. And that is what has happened in the Spanish Bible. And we will look at it. Be patient with me. We will get to it. I’ve renovated my whole recording platform and hopefully these will come out a little bit better. And I’m going to get there. I’m going to get there so much that you’ll be bored of hearing of them. Because I’m probably just going to hit a couple of verses per episode because that’s all I have time for. So you stay tuned and keep attentive for new episodes as they come out as I have time.
