Seeking Help #

Psalm 119:73-75

Introduction

This section is JOD, which if you look at the Hebrew letter in your Bible, it is the smallest letter… Just like it says in Matthew 5:18

Matthew 5:18 — For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

David is up on the mountain tops, or down in valleys with little in between. We find him in this portion, down in the valley. With troubles, and hardships. Each time we see David in a valley, he comes out rejoicing. We find God, and the Word of God to always be his source of help, and strength. A great lesson for us.

We are all prone to have difficulty, and struggle at times with being frustrated, discouraged with our life. Maybe health, perhaps it is finances, perhaps it is something else, but we all have a tendency to wish something was different in our life.

You will notice the last few verses are David’s requests, each verse starts with “LET” as in a request from God.

I. Recognition of God (73-75) #

A. Creator (73) #

i. World spoken (Gen 1) #

Genesis 1:3 — And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:6 — And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

Genesis 1:9 — And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

Genesis 1:11 — And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:14 — And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Genesis 1:20 — And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Genesis 1:24 — And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

Genesis 1:26 — And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

ii. Man made by God! #

Genesis 2:7 — And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

  • God got his hands* dirty, with the dust of the ground making man. His greatest work… and beyond that, breathed into his nostrils… and made a living soul!
  • You are an amazing creation of God! – it is no less miraculous that God made man procreate.

B. God gives understanding! (73) #

  • There is a difference between knowledge, and understanding.
  • Reading without comprehension – understanding is vastly different from reading.

C. Encouragement to others… because you have been faithful to God’s Word! (74) #

i. David recognized that he was a blessing to others #

ii. You are a living testimony! #

    • You are further down the road then someone else!
    • Be an encouragement!

i. God’s judgments #

    • Every decree, every decision, every thing that God does!
    • He is not wrong, and doesn’t make a mistake.

E. God’s affliction is right! (75) #

i. Affliction for sin #

Hebrews 12:6 — For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  • God punishes out of love, to bring you back to the right path!

ii. Trials for growth #

James 1:2–4 —2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

    • Trials, hardships cause us to grow, and be more patient!

II. Requests from God (76-80) #

  • David moves from his admiration of who God is, to requests that He makes of God!

A. Comforting Mercy (76) #

i. When you recognize God’s goodness and mercy, it is a comfort. #

  • When you have been through a tragic event, maybe an accident, maybe a long hospital stay… there is great comfort in being home!
  • God’s mercy is comforting to us…. Like being at home, wrapped in God’s comfort and care

B. Continued Mercy (77) #

i. He requests the continuance of God’s mercy… not a single one time act. #

  • There have been times where I recognize God helped me… I was very grateful… but I need God’s continued Mercy!

C. Casting down of the Proud (78) #

  • God is more than able to deal with our enemies, and those against us!
  • We need to focus, meditate in His Word!

D. Companionship (79) #

  • David wants to surround himself with those who 1. Fear God, 2. Know God’s Word

E. Continuance (80) #

  • Sound – entire, unbroken, not shaky, split or defective

    • rooted, grounded… let my heart be well established in God’s Word!
  • That I should not slip, fall, or fail.
