Goodness of God #

Psalm 119:72

Introduction

Every portion of this chapter has been of great value and help. Confession time, sometimes as a preacher, I feel rushed, and want to move on to the next chapter, but there is something in every section for us. We should not get ahead of God, or skip forward, and miss out.

The goodness of God is on full display in this portion of the Psalm. It is mentioned more than you realize.

David closes this portion with what he came to realize, the value of God’s Word in his life.

Psalm 119:72 — The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

How did he get to this conclusion? Let’s dig into the Psalm and find out.

I. Dealings of God are Good! (65) #

A. God is at work! #

“Thou hast dealt well with thy servant”

• God is working in your life!
• It doesn’t matter if you feel like He has abandoned you, He hasn’t, he is working!

Philippians 1:6 — Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

i. God has not stopped working! #

ii. God will not stop working! #

B. God deals well! #

• God is NEVER wrong.

• Everyone has authority in their life (parents, boss, teacher, pastor) that has made a decision, and they have disagreed with that authority, and later found out the person in charge was right!

  • Sometimes, human leadership makes mistakes, but God NEVER does!

C. God deals according to His WORD! #

i. Rules are well established! #

• • God is not about to change the rules!

ii. They are written, and preserved, and protected! #

II. Declaration of the David (66) #

• Under the realization of how good God is, David declares

A. Good judgement #

i. Bad judgment #

• • When I was a kid, we replaced a window in the house. Dad, having a piece of broken glass, and being the engineer that he is, pulled out a propane torch, and glass cutter. Cutting an edge off the glass, he heated it to soften the glass, until it was melting, and moving. A little end piece fell off of the glass. My friend and I sat watching intently the entire process. When the little glass piece fell off, my friend immediately reached down, and picked up the piece of glass. He didn’t hold it long, because he immediately felt the burn of hot glass! – He used poor judgement!
  • Some times we make bad decisions! – A friend of mine in Bolivia had a saying, “Great stories come from stupid decisions!” - Bad judgement!

ii. God teaches good judgement! #

• The Bible is His Text Book, and the Spirit is the Guide, and God teaches us!

B. Good Knowledge! #

• Knowledge – a clear and certain perception of that which exists, or of truth and fact. Information

i. There is bad knowledge that is flawed #

• People draw conclusions, and count them as fact which are not true!
• Be aware of bad knowledge!

ii. There is good knowledge #

III. Discovery in Affliction (67) #

A. How Wonderful God is! (68) #

• This is emphatically stated!

i. God is always Good! “Thou art good” #

• It is not possible for God to be bad

• People sometimes have a bad perception of God, but it is only their skewed perspective.

  • What you see is not always reality!

ii. God does good! “doest good” #

B. How Wicked the World is! (69-71) #

i. “The proud” (69) #

• Proud – possessing a high or unreasonable conceit of one’s own excellence, either of body or mind, arrogant, haughty.
• Pride is an sin that is planted in the heart, and begins to manifest itself in lots of different ways, discontentment, strife, lying, expectations etc.

ii. “forged a lie against me” (69) #

• No surprise, God linked those two things together in Proverbs 6

Proverbs 6:16–17 —16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

iii. “Their heart is as fat as grease” #

• • They are completely insensitive, have lost any sensitivity to moral right and wrong.

iv. Hardship helps us learn (71) #

C. How invaluable the Word is (72) #

• Price of gold is $4,400 per ounce. 1000 ounces, $4.4 million, 2000 ounces, $8.8 million “thousands of gold and silver” – implies multiple 1000’s, 2 or more!
