Introduction

2 Samuel 15 covers David being betrayed by Absalom. He fled Jerusalem, and passed over the brook Kidron to take refuge in the wilderness. David’s actions parallel and foreshadow that of Jesus, as Jesus also had a great conspiracy rise against him. The only place the brook Kidron is mentioned in the NT is in John 18:1:

Introduction

The Psalm title reads, “To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David.”

Neginoth is a Hebrew word, and is the plural form of Neginah. Neginoth is the general term used for all stringed instruments. So the chief musician, would be the conductor for the stringed instruments. It shows up in Psalm 4, Ps 54, 55, 61, 67, 76.

The Conqueror #

Introduction

There are two major parts to this Psalm, verses 1-10, and 11-20. It is a Psalm of David. We don’t know when it was written, or for what circumstance. It could fit in many circumstances, some of the betters guesses, it was written several years after David had slain Goliath. We are not certain of this, but it is likely.

Frustration with the Wicked #

Psalm 10

Introduction

This Psalm is clearly divided into two parts. Verses 1-11 all talk about the wicked works that are going on. You can feel the frustration that he is experiencing as he gives all his concerns. We have all been there at some point, completely frustrated, annoyed, with the wickedness that is going on around us. May the scrutiny of wickedness in our day, drive us to God in prayer. I feel we just live accepting wickedness, as a permanent fixture in our society. We really should be burdened by it, and about it. It is an absolute dredge on society.

Introduction

Psalm 12 is a tremendous chapter. Many messages have been written and preached on verses 6-7. I love studying a passage with the whole context, and especially when there are verses so familiar and used. It is refreshing to see them in context. Why would some pray without sincerity?
Some pray to be seen of men, some pray to be heard of men, however, we must pray to communicate with God. Parable Luke 18:9-14

Introduction

You will notice at the top of your Psalm, “A Psalm and Song at the dedication of the house of David.”

We are prone to think immediately that this is a Psalm given after David finished building his house. I would not discredit that idea, but several others believe it could have been when David bought the threshing floor of Ornan (1 Chro 21, or 2 Sam 24, or Araunah), and stopped the plague in Israel. They believe it to be a Psalm of praise issued in faith to the future building of the Temple, which happened on the site David purchased

This Psalm was written when David had been driven out of the country. He was forced to the land of the Philistines. Obviously, he was not welcome there, as he had killed their giant, and their hero. To help us get full context of this Psalm, let’s read the account.

The Three Fold Prayer #

Introduction

A three fold prayer, is not uncommon in Scripture. After all, didn’t Jesus pray in the garden three times? It was Paul who prayed to be delivered of his thorn in the flesh three times. We read in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

We can view most Psalms from the eyes or perspective of the writer. Looking at it from the time of the writing. They can be viewed prophetically, looking forward to what they would represent. Remember, when they were written, Jesus Christ had not yet been brought into the world as the Supreme Sacrifice. The Holy Spirit had not yet come to be the Comforter. Dealing with Betrayal #

Introduction

Psalm 41, is the close of Book 1 of the Psalms. The Hebrews divide the psalms into 5 books. 1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150. All of the Psalms in book one, are believed to be written by David.

The Psalms are filled with emotion. Positive emotion expressed joyfully in praise to the Lord. Frustration, discouragement, sadness are all themes that are clearly given throughout the Psalms.
