Spiritual Vigilance #

Mark 14:32-42

Introduction

We have a very serious passage before us. We are close to the end of Jesus life, and it is a serious time. Some seasons of our life are heavy times. This was a heavy time for the Lord. Countless arguments have been made about the prayer in the garden about what Jesus meant by his prayer “Let this cup pass from me.” I personally think it was probably the physical agony he woul dfeel as he suffered on the cross. Not that he didn’t want to die, but he didn’t want to die in the fashion that he would die. It was one of the most cruel, torturous, painful ways of dying.

There are three things that were given to the disciples. We find these three same things important in our own life in 2026. While the circumstances are different, the instructions are still important, and applicable for today.

I. Be Still - “Sit ye here” (32), “tarry ye here” (34) #

A. Quiet time #

Psalm 46:10 — Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

i. Busyness – #

  • We live in a society, that never stops. Life is so busy
  • Activity is often praised, and setting still nos discouraged.
  • Productivity is good, and should be done!

ii. Noise - #

  • Quietness of night time… no street lights, people would be in, not much noise, but the noise of the
  • We fill our lives with entertainment on every corner.
  • In Bible times they didn’t have TV, Social Media, they were literally setting in a garden

iii. Know God #

  • As you set, and think, contemplate God, creation, God’s work.

B. Patience #

Psalm 27:1 — A Psalm of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ….

Psalm 27:14 — Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

i. No one likes to wait. #

  • These are two of my least favorite verses, in one message.

  • There are times, were God, wants us to SET STILL, and WAIT!

  • What is the purpose of waiting… sometimes we don’t know.

    • The disciples were not given a specific reason, nor explained why, just “sit ye hear”

II. Be Sober - “watch” (34) #

Watch – 1. To be awake; to be or continue without sleep. 2. To be attentive; to look with attention or steadiness. 4. To keep guard – Noah Webster’s dictionary

A. Watch because there is an enemy #

1 Peter 5:8 — Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

i. There is an enemy #

  • He desires you to stumble, to fall, to fail
  • He cannot take away your salvation, but he can cause you to not reach others!

ii. Soldier that is set to guard, must be vigilant! #

  • There is wickedness at every turn, and we must guard our self!

B. We are commanded to be watching! #

1 Thessalonians 5:6–8 —6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

i. In 1 Thess 4:13-18 – the coming of Christ #

ii. 1 Thess 5:1-2 (context) sets the tone #

1 Thessalonians 5:1–2 —1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

iii. Jesus is coming #

  • Be sober, as in don’t drink, don’t do drugs.
  • Keep faith – As you are still, and being sober, don’t lose faith!
  • Keep love – Continue to love people – brethren, imperfect people, who need salvation!
  • Be Saved!

III. Be in Supplication (38) #

Supplication – earnest prayer

  • Jesus was in real agony… I don’t want to misword, or misrepresent Jesus, because he was perfect, and didn’t have a sinful flesh. While I may struggle to vocalize exactly the battle going on in the heart of Jesus, there was a battle going on.
  • Vs 33 – “began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy”

Mark 14:34 — And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

  • It is clear there is a real spiritual battle taking place in the garden of Gethsemane.

  • Verse 36

  • While Jesus is in this intense spiritual battle, the disciples fell asleep!

    • It is not wrong to sleep, it is necessary, however in this moment, it was sin!
    • Sleeping at the wrong time, is SIN!
    • Often while being still, being sober, we grow sleepy, and fall asleep spiritually.

A. “Lest ye enter into temptation” #

Romans 13:11-14

  • When you live in the last days, there is a great temptation to let down the guard, and fall into the wickedness of the world!
  • Don’t follow the world!
  • Don’t give in to the flesh

B. Put the flesh in subjection! #

  • There is a certain amount of discipline that Jesus expects

1 Corinthians 9:27 — But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

C. Pray #

  • God can do things you cannot!
  • I’m a doer, I like to be actively doing… but I cannot do everything. God is not limited
