Warning from God #
Mark 14:27-31
Introduction
We are in the last days of Jesus. The disciples are about to pass some of the most difficult trials in their life. Jesus has warned them, but they simply didn’t understand.
I. Offenses will come (Mark 14:27) #
- Jesus is the perfect example! He never sinned, nor did wrong!
- Offend - 3. to cause (a person or group) to feel hurt, angry, or upset by something said or done
A. Offenses come in many forms #
- Jesus is sinless, and didn’t do anything wrong, and the disciples were still offended!
i. Jesus would die #
- Jesus had told the disciples, but they had it in their minds, He was the Messiah, and therefore would setup his reign now, they would not see the real plan.
- Jesus plan was to die, we see it clearly now!
John 1:29 — The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
ii. Attacks on the under Shepherd #
Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
- This was not the only time, Peter was imprisoned, and beaten
- It was a serious time of Christianity, when there was a real price to be paid to be a Christian.
- Today, being a Christian is easy.
iii. Attacks on Christianity (Acts 20:28-30) #
- People are offended at all sorts of things today, and leave church.
- The devil wants to destroy Bible believing churches!
B. Sometimes Christians fall #
i. Christians are bound to mess up #
ii. Preachers are bound to mess up (pastors, missionaries and evangelists) #
- While I believe there is a higher standard to be a preacher, we are not perfect, and still have a sin nature!
C. Fallout – “the sheep shall be scattered” #
II. Overconfidence of Peter (Mark 14:29) #
Proverbs 16:18 — Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
- Note that verse down, and memorize it!
- We must be reminded that we are vulnerable
1 Corinthians 10:12–13 —12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
A. Overconfidence Comes because of experience #
- The disciples had been with Jesus for about 3 years, they were comfortable!
- They enjoyed ministering, serving, learning from the Lord
i. When you think you have it all figured out, you better be concerned! #
- You don’t have it all figured out!
- You better be focused on the Lord!
1 Corinthians 8:2 — And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
ii. Forget your past accomplishments! (Phil 3:13) #
Philippians 3:13 — Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
B. Overconfidence is overcome, by depending on Jesus #
- The only way to not be overconfident, is recognize the fact that you need God every day!
Gal. 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
III. Obstinance of Peter (Mark 14:30-31) #
- Jesus clearly told Peter, you are going to deny me.
- The first time was overconfidence, trusting in his flesh and strength
- This time, is just Obstinance
- obstinate - stubbornly holding to an opinion, purpose, or course in spite of reason, arguments, or persuasion
A. God is always right #
- God doesn’t make mistakes!
- It doesn’t matter what you think, what your opinion is, God is RIGHT!
B. We don’t always like God’s plan #
There was nothing enjoyable about watching Jesus be betrayed, have a mock trial, be beaten and crucified.
It sent the disciples into a complete tailspin
Peter said, “I go a fishing”
- I’m returning to my prior life, I’m all done.
C. God’s plan was best #
- Jesus had to die
- The disciples knew he would raise again from the dead (they looked forward to the resurrection).
- But for Jesus to rise three days later (he had told them) they didn’t get it.
i. That was Salvation, God’s plan! #
Heb. 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; 15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
ii. Don’t become hardhearted with God! #
- You cannot win fighting against God
